Chapter 3: Five AM
WREN
The rooster was not in the briefing materials.
She had reviewed the magazine’s background file on Hargrove Ranch. She had read three other ranch feature pieces for context. She had bought appropriate clothes — boots that the outdoor store had assured her were ranch-suitable, jeans that could get dirty, shirts that could handle heat. She had prepared for the early mornings, the physical work, the absence of reliable cell signal, the cattle.
Nobody had mentioned the rooster.
It started at four fifty-two. She knew the exact time because she was already awake, had been awake since four-fifteen, which was the point at which the specific quality of silence in the guest cabin — not the white-noise city silence she slept in at home but a real, thick, country silence broken only by something moving in the grass outside — had crossed the threshold from unsettling to untenable.
She had been lying in the dark telling herself she was resting.
The rooster disagreed.
She got up. She made the coffee, using the small drip machine on the cabin counter, which produced something that was technically coffee in the same way that gas station hot dogs were technically food. She stood on the small porch in the early dark with the mug and felt the Texas heat that was already present even before the sun was, a warm breathing weight in the air, and looked at the property coming slowly visible in the grey pre-dawn.
It was, she would admit privately, beautiful.
The sky out here was different — enormous in a way that the city sky wasn’t, the stars still fading at the edges, the horizon line unbroken by buildings. The land rolled away from the house in every direction, dark and immense and deeply, unmistakably itself. She stood on the porch and took notes — real notes, in the notebook, not the mental kind — because the light was doing something specific and she didn’t want to lose the exact quality of it.
“You’re up.”
She startled. Hard.
The girl was eight or nine, in cut-off shorts and a t-shirt that said DUSTY CREEK YOUTH RODEO, barefoot on the porch step with an expression of total unselfconsciousness. Brown hair in two braids. Cole Hargrove’s eyes, the same direct quality, but without any of the wariness behind them.
“You scared me,” Wren said.
“I know. Sorry.” The girl did not look particularly sorry. “I’m Ruby. Daddy’s daughter.”
“Wren. The writer.”
“I know.” Ruby looked at the notebook. “Are you writing right now?”
“Trying to.”
“About what?”
“The light,” Wren said, gesturing at the sky.
Ruby looked at the sky. “It’s the same every morning.”
“I know. That’s what I’m writing about.”
Ruby considered this. She sat down on the porch step with the ease of a child who owned every surface she occupied. “The coffee’s bad in the cabin,” she said. “June’s is better. June’s my grandma. She makes biscuits on Mondays.”
“Is it Monday?”
“Yes.”
Wren looked at her notebook. She looked at the cabin’s bad coffee. She looked at the girl.
“Lead the way,” she said.
The main house kitchen was warm and smelled like butter and something that her city life had not prepared her for — a specific combination of wood, coffee, and actual cooking that hit her somewhere in the chest with the force of something she didn’t have a clean name for. June Hargrove was at the stove, sixty-something, with white hair in a bun and an expression that clocked Wren in the doorway and registered several things simultaneously.
“Sit down,” she said, which was not unfriendly and was not a suggestion.
Wren sat down.
The coffee was better. The biscuits were — she wrote this in her notebook and underlined it — the best biscuits she had ever had, which she acknowledged might be comparative (cabin coffee, four-fifty am, rooster) but which she suspected was also absolute.
She ate and watched the kitchen come alive and wrote down things and Ruby talked almost continuously, explaining the ranch’s geography, her horse’s name (Pepper, seven years old, very fast), the school she went to, and her opinion on various things including the magazine piece (“Daddy doesn’t like being watched”), the guest cabin (“it’s better than the old one”), and Wren’s boots (“those are good ones, you can tell they’re new though”).
At five-forty-five, Cole Hargrove came in from outside, took one look at Wren at his kitchen table, and went to pour himself coffee without comment.
She watched him.
He didn’t look back.
Ruby said: “Daddy, I showed her the kitchen.”
“I can see that,” he said.
“The cabin coffee is bad.”
“It’s functional.”
“June’s is better.”
“Ruby.”
The girl grinned into her biscuit, entirely satisfied.
Wren looked at her notebook. She wrote: *Ruby Hargrove, 8. Immediate ally. Possible primary source.*
She looked up to find Cole Hargrove watching her write, and then not watching, his attention back on the window and the land outside.
She wrote: *Cole Hargrove, 34. Doesn’t like being watched.*
She underlined the second sentence.
She thought: this is going to be the best piece she’d ever written.
She was already sure of it.
