Chapter 27: No More Hiding
Jace
The investigation concludes.
Principal Okafor calls Sienna and Jace to a meeting.
“After reviewing the circumstances—and receiving Harper’s letter—the board has reached a decision.”
Sienna holds her breath.
“Ms. Martinez, you violated policy. However, the policy itself is vague regarding relationships that develop BEFORE employment complications arise. You also attempted to maintain boundaries for months.”
“What does that mean?” Sienna asks.
“It means you’re not fired. But there are conditions.”
“Anything.”
“Harper will be transferred to Mr. Peterson’s class for the remainder of the year. You’ll receive an official reprimand in your file. And you and Mr. Blackwell must agree to counseling to address professional boundaries.”
“We’ll do it,” Jace says immediately.
“And one more thing. No more secrecy. If you’re going to date, you date openly. No hiding. No lying. Understood?”
“Understood,” they say in unison.
Outside the office, Sienna collapses against Jace.
“I still have my job.”
“You do.”
“Harper has to change classes.”
“She’ll be okay. She wants this. Wants US.”
“Are you sure?”
“She wrote that letter, didn’t she?”
Sienna laughs through tears. “She did.”
“So what now?”
“Now we do this for real. No more hiding.”
He kisses her. Right there in the school hallway.
And Sienna kisses him BACK.
Finally free.
