The night split open with howls.

Mira jolted awake to the sound of shattering wood, her heart hammering as screams carried through the village. Shadows surged beyond the thin walls of her home—shapes that were too fast, too savage to be human. She scrambled for her cloak, every instinct urging her toward the door, toward the people crying out for help.

The scent of smoke hit first. Then blood.

When she pushed outside, chaos reigned. Huts burned as fire licked up their thatched roofs, sparks scattering against the dark sky. Wolves—massive, monstrous—ripped through the village, eyes glowing with the sickly light of rogues who had lost their humanity. Neighbors fell beneath their claws, and the air was thick with the metallic stench of violence.

Mira froze for a breath too long. She knew these stories. Rogues were supposed to be far from here, prowling the wild borders of forgotten lands. They weren’t meant to breach the safety of her people. They weren’t meant to be real.

A scream snapped her out of it.

“Mira!”

She turned in time to see a neighbor dragged down, blood spraying against the dirt. Her body moved before her mind caught up, sprinting into the chaos. She shoved children behind her, pulled an elder to their feet, her palms slick with sweat and ash. Her heart roared in her ears as another wolf lunged—fangs bared, eyes burning with hunger.

She stumbled back. It was too fast. Too strong. She had no weapon, no chance—

And then the night shifted.

A new howl cut through the carnage, deeper, commanding. The rogue froze mid-lunge, its head snapping toward the sound. Out of the smoke, a figure emerged, towering, broad-shouldered, radiating a power that made the air tremble. Golden eyes burned in the darkness—not wild like the rogues, but sharp, controlled. Deadly.

The wolves hesitated. For the first time since the attack began, they seemed uncertain.

The man moved with brutal efficiency. He shifted mid-stride, bones cracking, fur bursting through skin as his form blurred into a massive wolf. He hit the rogues with terrifying force, claws raking, jaws snapping. Blood sprayed, and their howls turned from hunger to fear.

Mira stumbled back, breath locked in her chest. This wasn’t some wild beast. This was an alpha.

And when his golden eyes cut across the flames to hers, she felt the weight of it. A gaze that saw through her, claimed her, even before she understood what it meant.

The fire roared, the rogues scattered, and the world narrowed to that single look.
