The night stretched long, but Mira couldn’t sleep. Every time she closed her eyes, she felt it—the heat of his body too near, the bond whispering secrets into her blood. She hated it. She hated him. And yet her chest ached in ways that fear alone couldn’t explain.

By dawn, she wandered to the shoreline where the forest met the lake. Mist curled off the water, silver and ghostly, the world hushed as though holding its breath. She let the cold wash over her skin, hoping it would quiet the fire inside.

But she wasn’t alone.

Darius stood at the edge of the water, his reflection broken in the ripples. He didn’t look like the alpha then. He looked like a man carrying too much, bound by a curse he couldn’t escape.

“You should rest,” he said without turning.

“I couldn’t.” Her voice was quiet, nearly lost to the wind.

He finally faced her, golden eyes catching the pale light. For a long moment, they simply stared at each other, the air between them trembling with unspoken things.

Mira wrapped her arms around herself. “This bond… it feels like it’s tearing me apart.”

His jaw tightened, his gaze burning. “And yet it pulls you closer.”

Her throat went dry. She wanted to deny it, to spit the word no with every ounce of defiance left in her. But her body betrayed her—every breath, every heartbeat thrummed in time with his.

Darius stepped toward her, slow, deliberate, like a predator stalking prey he already owned. Her pulse quickened, her feet refusing to move.

“Tell me you don’t feel it,” he murmured, his voice low, rough.

Mira’s lips parted, the lie caught in her throat. The bond flared between them, hot and undeniable, her body trembling at the nearness of him. For a heartbeat, she leaned into it—into him.

Then she turned sharply, breaking the moment before it consumed her. “I won’t surrender to this.”

His gaze lingered, his expression unreadable, though something dark and longing flickered in his eyes.

As she walked away, the bond pulsed once more, deep and dangerous. She hadn’t surrendered. Not yet. But she was closer than she dared admit.
