The village smoldered in silence once the rogues fled, their howls fading into the forest. Mira stood amid the wreckage, chest heaving, cloak singed at the edges. Bodies lay scattered on the ground, fires crackling low as smoke curled into the starless sky.

He was still there.

The great wolf shook ash from his dark fur before shifting back into a man, tall and imposing, his skin streaked with blood that was not his own. Darius. She’d heard the name in whispers—an alpha cursed by the moon itself, a leader who ruled beyond their borders with both fear and devotion. Seeing him in flesh made every rumor too small.

Mira’s breath caught. The golden glow of his eyes hadn’t dimmed with his shift. They burned even brighter in his human face, piercing and unrelenting as they landed on her.

“Who leads this village?” His voice was rough, deep, and final—as though defiance wasn’t an option.

Silence spread through the survivors. No one dared answer. Her father should have been the one to step forward, but he lay injured near the well, bleeding into the dirt. Mira’s stomach twisted as she saw him struggle to rise, his pride more stubborn than his body.

She moved first. “I do,” she lied, standing taller than she felt.

Those eyes narrowed, flickering with something unreadable. Amusement? Respect? A challenge? Darius crossed the distance between them with the measured stride of a predator. Each step pressed against her chest until she could hardly breathe.

“You?” His gaze swept over her—assessing, weighing, stripping her bare. “Brave… or foolish.”

Heat pricked at her skin, though not from the lingering fires. “Does it matter? You asked for a leader. I’m standing here.”

A slow, dangerous smile curved his lips. “Then you’ll hear my warning. The rogues won’t stop. This land is no longer safe. Come under my protection, or be slaughtered when they return.”

Gasps rose around her. The word protection sounded too close to surrender. Mira’s spine stiffened. She knew what alphas demanded—obedience, loyalty, sometimes worse.

Her voice didn’t waver. “We’ll protect ourselves.”

The smile faded. For a heartbeat, only the crackle of fire filled the silence. Then he leaned closer, his golden eyes catching the light like molten metal.

“You already failed,” he murmured. “And next time, I may not arrive in time to save you.”

Her heart stumbled, but she refused to lower her gaze. She’d faced blood and fire tonight; she wouldn’t flinch now.

And yet, when he finally turned away, Mira felt as though a tether had been tied around her throat—a bond unspoken, pulling tight with every breath.
