The village felt smaller by the day, its walls pressing in with whispers and judgment. Mira could hardly draw breath without feeling watched, without hearing her father’s warning echo in her head. Every look from the pack was a blade, every step beside Darius a brand searing deeper into her skin.
That night, she packed what little she had—just enough to slip away quietly. She told herself it was survival, that she wasn’t running from him but from the cage the bond had built around her.
But as she crept through the trees, the tether burned hot, dragging her to a halt.
You can’t leave me.
The voice shivered through her skull, raw and unbidden. She spun, heart in her throat.
Darius emerged from the shadows, golden eyes lit with fury and something far more dangerous—fear.
“You think you can vanish into the night?” His voice was sharp, ragged.
Her chest heaved. “I can’t live like this. With them watching. With you—”
“With me what?” His words cut, his steps bringing him closer. “Protecting you? Saving you? Wanting you until it tears me apart?”
Tears stung her eyes. “I don’t want to be wanted because of a bond. I want to be free.”
The air between them vibrated with tension, the bond pulling tight like a noose. Darius’s jaw clenched, his hands curling into fists at his sides. For a long moment, he said nothing. Then, quieter, rawer, “Do you think I’m free?”
The words silenced her, hollowing her chest.
He stepped back, as if distance was the only mercy he could give. “Go, then. But know this—wherever you run, the bond will find you. And so will I.”
Mira turned, her body trembling as she stumbled into the night. But even as the forest swallowed her, the bond seared hotter, tethering her to the very man she was trying to escape.
