The village slept uneasily under the watch of wolves, but Mira lay wide awake, her wrist burning with the bond’s pulse. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw golden fire and claws ripping through the dark.

She gave up on rest and wandered into the night. The air was sharp with pine and ash, the silence broken only by the distant pacing of Darius’s wolves. She thought she was alone until she heard the sound.

A growl. Low, guttural, dangerous.

Her heart lurched. She followed it without meaning to, drawn by instinct she didn’t want to name. The sound led her to the edge of the forest, where moonlight spilled silver over the clearing.

And there he was.

Darius was on his knees, his body convulsing, sweat glistening across his skin. His golden eyes burned too brightly, his jaw clenched as claws pushed against his fingertips, threatening to tear through. His breath came in ragged snarls, every muscle trembling with the effort of control.

Mira froze. He was shifting—but not fully. It looked wrong, violent, as if something inside him fought to tear free. The stories whispered about him surged back in her mind: cursed by the moon, trapped between man and beast.

His head snapped toward her.

“Go,” he growled, his voice distorted, half-human, half-wolf.

Mira should have fled. Every instinct screamed to run. But she stepped closer instead, her pulse racing. “You’re in pain.”

His claws dug into the dirt as he fought to keep from changing, shoulders straining, spine arching with the effort. “You don’t understand. I can’t—control—”

The words cut off in a howl. His form blurred, his teeth elongating, his eyes flashing with wildness. For a heartbeat, Mira saw not the alpha but the beast clawing its way to the surface.

Her breath caught. And yet, she didn’t move. Something in the bond held her still.

“Darius,” she whispered, her voice trembling but steady. “Fight it. You’re not alone.”

The golden fire in his eyes flickered. His growl broke into a ragged breath. Slowly, painfully, the claws receded, his body shuddering back into stillness. He collapsed to his knees, chest heaving, sweat dripping into the soil.

Silence settled over the clearing, dense and unyielding.

Finally, he lifted his gaze to hers. There was no arrogance there now, no alpha command—only exhaustion. And something like fear.

“You shouldn’t have seen that,” he said hoarsely.

Mira’s wrist throbbed in answer, the bond pulsing between them. “I think I was meant to.”
