ARCHER

The standoff lasts three seconds.

Feels like three hours.

Malcolm with his gun to Marcus’s head.

Me with my gun on Malcolm.

Willa behind me, terrified.

Six armed men in the shadows.

Tobias and the SWAT team outside, waiting for my signal.

“Drop it, Saint.”

“Can’t do that.”

“Then your partner dies.”

Marcus speaks for the first time.

“Don’t do it, Archer. He’s bluffing.”

“Am I?” Malcolm presses the gun harder against Marcus’s temple.

Shit.

I lower my gun.

Slowly.

Set it on the ground.

“Kick it away.”

I do.

Malcolm smiles.

“Good boy. Now step back.”

I step back.

Positioning myself between Malcolm and Willa.

“You too, sweetheart. Come out where I can see you.”

“No,” I say.

“It wasn’t a request.”

Willa steps out from behind me.

Chin up. Brave.

God, she’s brave.

Malcolm looks at her.

Really looks.

“So this is the girl my father’s men tried to take. The one you saved. The one you died for.”

“Leave her alone.”

“Or what? You’re unarmed. Outnumbered. Surrounded.”

He’s right.

But he doesn’t know about the SWAT team.

I just need to buy time.

“What do you want, Malcolm?”

“I already told you. I want you to suffer. Like I suffered when you killed my father.”

“Your father ran a trafficking ring. He destroyed lives.”

“He was a businessman.”

“He was a monster.”

Malcolm’s eyes flash.

Dangerous.

“And you’re a hero? Is that what you tell yourself? That you saved these girls? Made the world better?”

“I did my job.”

“You destroyed my family.”

“Your father destroyed his own family when he chose crime.”

Wrong thing to say.

Malcolm’s finger tightens on the trigger.

Marcus closes his eyes.

“WAIT!”

Willa steps forward.

No. No no no.

“You want revenge?” she says. “Then take me. Let Marcus go. Let Archer go. Just take me.”

My heart stops.

“Willa, don’t—”

“I’m the reason you found Archer. I’m the reason he’s here. I’m the leverage you need. So take me.”

Malcolm considers this.

“Interesting offer.”

“Willa—”

“It’s okay, Archer.”

She looks at me.

Eyes full of trust. Love. Goodbye.

Fuck this.

I hit my panic button.

The signal for SWAT.

Windows shatter.

Flashbangs explode.

SWAT floods in.

Chaos.

I dive for Willa.

Tackle her to the ground.

Cover her body with mine.

Gunfire erupts.

When it stops, the warehouse is full of FBI agents.

Malcolm’s six men are on the ground. Cuffed.

Marcus is free.

And Malcolm is gone.

Fuck.

“Where is he?” I shout.

“Back exit!” someone yells.

I’m on my feet.

Running.

“Archer!” Willa calls.

“Stay with Marcus!”

I burst through the back door.

Alley. Dark. Empty.

Engine roaring in the distance.

He got away.

FUCK.

I kick a dumpster.

Rage and frustration boiling over.

We had him.

We fucking had him.

And he slipped through our fingers.

Tobias appears beside me.

“It’s over.”

“It’s not over. He got away.”

“We have his men. They’ll talk. We’ll find him.”

“He’ll disappear. Go underground. We’ll never—”

“Archer. Breathe. We won. Look.”

He points back at the warehouse.

Willa and Marcus are alive. Safe.

Surrounded by FBI agents.

We won.

Not completely.

But enough.

I walk back.

Marcus sees me first.

Grins despite the blood and bruises.

“Took you long enough.”

“Shut up.”

I hug him.

Hard.

“I thought I lost you.”

“Can’t get rid of me that easy.”

Willa is next.

She crashes into me.

Arms around my neck.

Face in my chest.

“You’re okay. We’re okay.”

“Yeah. We are.”

For now.

Paramedics check Marcus.

Broken ribs. Concussion. Needs stitches.

But alive.

Willa is unharmed.

Shaken but unharmed.

We go to the hospital.

Tobias debriefs us there.

“Malcolm Domenico is in the wind. But we have six of his men. They’re already talking. Deals for testimony. Within forty-eight hours, we’ll have his location.”

“And then?”

“And then we end this.”

I nod.

Exhausted.

“Go home,” Tobias says. “Both of you. We’ll handle the rest.”

“I’m staying with Marcus.”

“Archer—”

“I’m staying.”

He doesn’t argue.

Willa stays too.

Curled up in a hospital chair beside me.

Head on my shoulder.

“Today was intense.”

“That’s one word for it.”

“I was terrified.”

“You didn’t show it.”

“I did. I just didn’t let Malcolm see.”

I kiss her forehead.

“You were incredible. Brave. Stupid. But incredible.”

“You would have done the same.”

“Yeah. But I’m trained for this. You’re not.”

“Maybe I should be.”

I look at her.

“What?”

“After this is over. After Malcolm is caught. Teach me. Self-defense. Shooting. Whatever you know.”

“Willa—”

“I don’t want to be helpless ever again. I want to be able to protect myself. And you.”

She means it.

“Okay.”

“Really?”

“Really. When this is over, I’ll teach you everything I know.”

She smiles.

Exhausted but genuine.

“Good.”

Marcus wakes up an hour later.

Groggy from pain meds.

“Did we win?”

“Sort of.”

“Malcolm?”

“Escaped.”

“Figures.”

He looks at Willa.

“You must be the girl.”

“Willa.”

“Marcus. Thanks for the rescue.”

“Archer did the rescuing.”

“He’s good at that.”

They shake hands.

“She’s a keeper,” Marcus says to me.

“I know.”

“Don’t fuck it up.”

“I won’t.”

Willa blushes.

We stay until Marcus falls asleep again.

Then Tobias drives us home.

Back to the apartment building.

Crime scene tape still on Willa’s door from the earlier break-in.

“You can’t stay here,” I say.

“Then where?”

“My place. Until we find Malcolm.”

“And after?”

I look at her.

“After, wherever you want.”

She takes my hand.

“I want to be with you. Wherever that is.”

Even if it means witness protection.

Even if it means leaving everything behind.

She’d do it.

For me.

“Let’s catch Malcolm first. Then we’ll figure out the rest.”

“Okay.”

We go to my apartment.

She showers. Changes into my clothes.

Looks tiny and beautiful and perfect.

We fall into bed.

Exhausted.

Traumatized.

Alive.

“Archer?”

“Yeah?”

“I love you.”

Third time she’s said it.

But it never gets old.

“I love you too.”

She falls asleep in my arms.

Safe.

For now.

And I make a silent promise.

When this is over, I’m keeping her.

Forever.
