ARCHER

I call my mother.

For the first time in three years.

She thinks I’m dead.

Buried. Mourned. Gone.

But Tobias cleared it.

If I’m retiring, I can contact family.

Resume my life.

The phone rings.

Once. Twice.

“Hello?”

Her voice breaks me.

“Mom. It’s me.”

Silence.

Then: “Archer?”

“Yeah. It’s me.”

She starts crying.

Loud, ugly, grateful sobs.

“You’re alive. Oh God, you’re alive. How—where—why—”

“I couldn’t tell you. FBI witness protection. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”

“You’re ALIVE.”

We talk for an hour.

I explain everything.

The undercover work. The fake death. The witness protection.

The danger. The isolation. The loneliness.

And Willa.

“You’re in love.”

“Yes.”

“Is she good to you?”

“She’s everything, Mom.”

“Then bring her home. I want to meet her.”

Home.

I haven’t had a home in three years.

“Okay. I will.”

“When?”

“Soon. I promise.”

We hang up.

And I feel lighter than I have in years.

Willa is watching me.

“How’d it go?”

“Good. She cried. A lot. But good.”

“She must be so relieved.”

“She wants to meet you.”

Willa’s eyes widen.

“Really?”

“Yeah. I told her about you. About us.”

“What did you tell her?”

“That you’re the woman I love. And that I’m not letting you go.”

She kisses me.

“Good answer.”

The next day, Marcus is released from the hospital.

We meet him for lunch.

Normal restaurant. Normal people. Normal life.

Weird.

“So you’re really retiring?” Marcus asks.

“Thinking about it.”

“Do it. You’ve given enough. Time to live.”

“What about you?”

“Me? I’m staying in. Got a new assignment. Training new agents. Passing on the wisdom.”

“Wisdom? You?”

“Shut up.”

We laugh.

It feels good.

Normal.

“I’m happy for you, man,” Marcus says. “You deserve this. Happiness. Love. Normal boring civilian life.”

“It won’t be boring with Willa around.”

“True. She’s got fire.”

Willa blushes.

“Take care of him,” Marcus says to her. “He’s an idiot sometimes. But he’s a good man.”

“I know. I will.”

After lunch, we walk through the park.

Hand in hand.

Like normal couples.

“I made my decision,” Archer says.

My heart skips.

“Yeah?”

“I’m retiring. Going back to being Archer Saint. Getting my life back.”

Relief floods through me.

“Really?”

“Really. I’ve spent three years hiding. Running. Pretending to be someone else. I’m done. I want my life back. My name back. And I want you in it.”

“I want that too.”

“Even if it means leaving Silvercrest? Meeting my family? Starting completely over?”

“Especially if it means that.”

He stops walking.

Turns to face me.

“Willa Crane. Will you—”

He pauses.

Looks nervous.

“Will I what?”

“Will you move in with me? For real. Not just safe house proximity. But actual, intentional, sharing-a-life moving in together.”

Not a proposal.

But close.

And perfect.

“Yes. Absolutely yes.”

He kisses me.

Right there in the park.

In front of everyone.

Like we’re normal.

Like we’re safe.

Like we have a future.

Because we do.

That night, we tell Tobias.

“I’m retiring. Effective immediately.”

Tobias nods.

Like he knew all along.

“Good. You’ve earned it. I’ll process the paperwork. You’ll have your pension. Full benefits. Clean exit.”

“Thank you. For everything. For keeping me alive. For letting me protect Willa. For giving me a second chance.”

“You did the work, Saint. I just facilitated.”

They shake hands.

Professional. Respectful.

“What about you?” Tobias asks Willa. “What’s next for you?”

“Honestly? I don’t know. I’m a teacher. But Archer’s family is in Colorado. So maybe I transfer. Find a school there. Start fresh.”

“Sounds like a good plan.”

It does.

Scary.

But good.

We leave FBI headquarters.

For the last time.

“How does it feel?” Willa asks.

“Strange. Liberating. Terrifying.”

“Welcome to normal life.”

“Is it always like this?”

“Pretty much.”

I pull her close.

“I can handle that.”

And I mean it.
