The drive back to The Grandview Estate felt like a slow-motion descent into hell. Nate’s hands, still gripping the steering wheel, were slick with sweat, his knuckles white. The police cruiser, a silent, ominous escort, followed closely behind, its presence a stark reminder of his utter defeat. Every turn of the wheel brought him closer to the public humiliation he had so desperately tried to escape, closer to the two women he had so cruelly wronged. The beautiful, manicured grounds, once a symbol of his ambition and success, now loomed like a gallows. His double life had finally caught up to him, and the reckoning was about to be complete.

As they approached the main entrance, he saw the lingering signs of the aborted wedding: scattered rose petals on the cobblestones, a few bewildered guests still milling about, and the hushed, almost reverent silence that had replaced the earlier celebratory buzz. The atmosphere was thick with unspoken questions, with the heavy weight of scandal. He pulled his car to a stop near the service entrance, as instructed, and the police officer gestured for him to get out.

Nate hesitated, his heart hammering against his ribs, a frantic drumbeat of pure terror. His legs felt like lead, his stomach churning with nausea. He wanted to refuse, to lock the doors and disappear, but he knew it was futile. Mr. Dubois was a powerful man, and Nate was now completely at his mercy. He was trapped, utterly exposed. His betrayal mystery was no longer a secret, but a public spectacle.

He pushed open the car door, the sound echoing loudly in the sudden quiet. The cool air hit his face, but it did little to calm the inferno raging inside him. He stepped out, his perfectly tailored suit, now wrinkled and disheveled, feeling like a costume for a tragic play. He looked up, and his gaze immediately landed on the main mansion, where he knew Meredith, Cassie, and Mr. Dubois were waiting. The wedding drama was far from over.

The police officer, a silent, imposing presence, gestured for him to follow. They walked along the cobbled path, past the now-empty rows of white chairs, past the dismantled floral archway, each step a painful reminder of the future he had so carelessly squandered. He could feel the eyes of the few remaining guests on him, their whispers like daggers to his back. Shame, hot and suffocating, washed over him.

As they approached the mansion, the heavy oak doors swung open, and Mr. Dubois emerged, his face a mask of thunderous rage. He was flanked by two stern-faced men in dark suits, clearly security personnel. Mr. Dubois’s eyes, blazing with fury, fixed on Nate, and for a moment, Nate thought he would physically attack him.

“Nathanial Hayes,” Mr. Dubois’s voice boomed, cutting through the silence, “you have a lot to answer for.” His tone was cold, sharp, filled with an icy contempt that made Nate’s blood run cold. This was not the proud, jovial father-in-law he had cultivated; this was a man whose honor had been publicly disgraced, and he was out for blood.

Nate swallowed hard, his throat suddenly dry. “Mr. Dubois,” he stammered, his voice barely audible, “I… I can explain.” The words felt hollow, pathetic, even to his own ears. He knew there was no explanation, no excuse that could possibly justify the monstrous lies he had lived. His attempts at gaslight and excuses were useless here.

Mr. Dubois scoffed, a bitter, humorless sound. “Explain? There is nothing to explain, you despicable liar! You have humiliated my daughter, disgraced my family, and destroyed everything I built for you!” He took a menacing step forward, his eyes blazing. “You will pay for this, Hayes. I promise you, you will pay.”

The security guards stepped forward, forming a silent, intimidating barrier between Mr. Dubois and Nate. The police officer, sensing the escalating tension, cleared his throat. “Mr. Dubois, if you would allow us to proceed inside. We need to get statements.”

Mr. Dubois nodded, his gaze still fixed on Nate with a chilling intensity. “Very well. But know this, Hayes. Your career is over. Your reputation is in tatters. You will never work in this city again. I will see to it.” His words were a death knell, a cold, brutal confirmation of Nate’s worst fears. The ambition that had driven his double life was now the very thing that would be his undoing.

They were led into the opulent study, the same room where Cassie had laid bare her side of the story to Meredith and Chloe. The heavy oak door closed behind them, muffling the sounds of the outside world, creating a suffocating intimacy that made Nate’s skin crawl.

Meredith was seated on the plush leather sofa, her white gown still crumpled, her face pale and tear-streaked. Chloe sat beside her, a hand on her arm, her expression grim. And then Nate saw her. Cassie. She stood near the fireplace, her burgundy dress a striking contrast to the muted tones of the room. Her amber eyes, once warm and inviting, were now cold, hard, and utterly devoid of any emotion other than a chilling resolve. She looked at him, not with anger, but with a quiet, devastating contempt that was far worse than any fury.

The sight of them together, the two women he had so cruelly deceived, united in their pain and their silent accusation, was almost unbearable. He felt a fresh wave of shame wash over him, a burning sensation that spread through his entire body. He was the villain in this twist romance, and they were the wronged heroines, now allied against him.

“Nate,” Meredith said, her voice surprisingly steady, though still fragile. Her emerald eyes, though swollen, held a new glint, a cold, hard resolve that mirrored Cassie’s. “Tell him. Tell my father everything. Tell him about Cassie. Tell him about your double life.”

Nate swallowed hard, his gaze darting between Meredith, Cassie, and the furious face of Mr. Dubois. He was cornered, utterly exposed. There was no escape, no more lies he could spin. His attempts at gaslight and excuses were futile.

“I… I…” he stammered, his mind racing, desperately searching for a way to mitigate the damage, to salvage some shred of dignity. But there was nothing. The truth, raw and ugly, was all that remained.

“He was my boyfriend for two years, Mr. Dubois,” Cassie interjected, her voice clear and strong, cutting through Nate’s pathetic stammering. Her eyes never left Nate’s face, a silent challenge. “We lived together. He talked about our future, about marriage, about kids. All while he was engaged to Meredith.” She paused, letting the words sink in, each one a hammer blow. “He lived a secret fiancé life, deceiving both of us.”

Mr. Dubois’s jaw clenched, his eyes blazing. He looked at Nate, a silent demand for confirmation.

Nate finally met Mr. Dubois’s furious gaze. He took a shaky breath, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. “It’s… it’s true,” he whispered, his voice barely audible. “I… I was with Cassie. For two years. I was engaged to Meredith.” He couldn’t bring himself to look at either of them, his gaze fixed on the ornate rug beneath his feet. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.” The apology felt hollow, meaningless, even to him.

A collective gasp from the security guards and the police officer echoed in the room. Mr. Dubois let out a guttural growl, a sound of pure, unadulterated rage. “You apologize? You apologize after you have brought such shame upon my family? After you have broken my daughter’s heart? After you have destroyed your own future?” His voice was low, dangerous, a chilling whisper that promised retribution.

Meredith, though tears still streamed down her face, looked at Nate with a cold, unwavering gaze. “Why, Nate?” she asked, her voice trembling but firm. “Why would you do this? Why would you lie to me, to both of us, for so long?”

Nate finally lifted his head, his blue eyes filled with a desperate, pathetic sincerity. He looked at Meredith, then at Cassie, then back at Mr. Dubois. “I… I was ambitious,” he confessed, his voice cracking. “I saw an opportunity. Mr. Dubois, your offer… it was everything I ever wanted. A fast track to success. I convinced myself I could make it work. I genuinely cared for Meredith. And then… then I met Cassie. And I fell in love with her. I was trapped. I couldn’t let go of either of you. I was a coward.” His voice broke, and a single tear traced a path down his cheek, a pathetic display of self-pity.

Cassie watched him, her face devoid of emotion. His confession, his pathetic attempt at an explanation, did nothing to assuage her pain. It was too little, too late. His “cowardice” had shattered two lives, had created a betrayal mystery that would haunt them both.

“You fell in love with her?” Meredith scoffed, a bitter, humorless laugh escaping her lips. “While you were planning our wedding? While you were telling me you loved me, that I was your future? You’re a sociopath, Nate. A manipulative, selfish sociopath.” Her voice was filled with a chilling contempt that made Nate flinch.

Mr. Dubois stepped forward, his eyes blazing. “You will sign these papers, Hayes,” he commanded, his voice cold and hard. He gestured to a stack of legal documents on a nearby desk. “A full confession of your deceit, a relinquishment of any claims to my daughter or my company, and a public statement acknowledging your fraudulent behavior. If you refuse, I will ensure that you face every legal consequence possible. I will ruin you.”

Nate stared at the papers, his mind reeling. A full confession. A public statement. His name, his reputation, utterly destroyed. But he knew he had no choice. Mr. Dubois was not a man to be trifled with. He had lost everything already.

He looked at Cassie, a desperate, silent plea in his eyes. She met his gaze, her amber eyes cold and unwavering, offering no comfort, no forgiveness. He then looked at Meredith, who stared back with a mixture of pain and chilling resolve.

“Sign them, Nate,” Meredith said, her voice low and steady. “And then get out of our lives. Forever.”

Nate walked slowly to the desk, his movements stiff, his shoulders slumped in defeat. He picked up the pen, his hand trembling. He was signing away his future, his reputation, everything he had ever worked for. The chaos at the aisle had led to this, the complete and utter destruction of his carefully constructed world. He was the groom, but his wedding day had become his public execution.
