POV: DORIAN

I woke three weeks after the ritual to find the world transformed.

The first thing I noticed: I was alive. Breathing. Heart beating warm in my chest. The king-killing wound completely healed, leaving only a faint scar.

The second thing: Nova wasn’t beside me.

Panic spiked. Through the bond, I felt her—alive, conscious, but distant. Not in the medical chambers.

I found Laurel first. “Where’s Nova?”

“Throne room. She’s been running the fortress while you recovered.” Laurel’s expression was admiring. “She’s remarkable, Dorian. What she’s accomplished in three weeks—”

I was already moving.

The fortress felt different. Lighter somehow. I passed vampires and wolves talking casually in the halls—not just coexisting but actually conversing like friends. Children played together in the courtyard, both species mixed.

What had happened while I slept?

The throne room doors were open. Inside, Nova sat on the main throne—my throne—seven months pregnant and absolutely radiant with authority.

A line of petitioners stretched before her: vampires and wolves bringing disputes, requests, updates. And she handled each with patient wisdom that took my breath away.

“—so if we establish the trade route through the eastern territory,” a vampire merchant was saying, “both species profit equally from the gem mines.”

“Agreed,” Nova said. “But I want fair labor practices in those mines. No forcing wolves into vampire conditions or vice versa. Everyone works in their preferred environment.”

“That will slow production—”

“That will ensure no one’s exploited. Make it work or lose the trade license.” Her voice carried absolute authority.

The merchant bowed. “As you command, Alpha.”

She was ruling. Actually ruling. And everyone—vampire and wolf alike—accepted her authority without question.

I must have made a sound because her head snapped toward me. Our eyes met.

The room went silent.

Then Nova was moving—as fast as a pregnant hybrid could move—crossing to me with tears streaming down her face.

“You’re awake,” she said. “You’re actually awake.”

“I’ve been awake for all of five minutes and you’re already ruling my fortress without me.”

“Our fortress. And someone had to keep it running while you recovered from being dead.”

I gathered her into my arms, careful of her swollen belly. Through the bond, I felt her overwhelming relief and love.

And something else. Pride.

“What did you do?” I asked. “The fortress feels different.”

“I made some changes. Well, a lot of changes. Viktor said you’d approve.”

Viktor appeared, grinning. “She’s been brilliant, sir. Completely reformed the council structure, established equal representation, created new laws protecting both species. And everyone loves her.”

“Show me.”

Over the next hour, Nova walked me through the transformed fortress.

The feeding rooms hadn’t just been abolished—they’d been converted into schools where hybrid children learned from both vampire and wolf teachers.

The council chambers now had equal seats for both species, votes requiring majority from each group.

Trade had been restructured so wolves and vampires contributed equally and profited equally.

Even the fortress architecture had changed—windows added to vampire wings, underground dens created for wolves who preferred enclosed spaces.

It was everything we’d dreamed of. But Nova had actually built it.

“How?” I asked, stunned. “Three weeks and you’ve transformed centuries of vampire tradition.”

“I didn’t do it alone. Viktor helped with the vampire politics. Mara coordinated the wolf packs. Kira handled the logistics. Laurel made sure I didn’t die from stress while seven months pregnant.” Nova squeezed my hand. “But mostly, people were ready for change. They’d just been waiting for someone to give them permission.”

“So you did.”

“So I did.”

I looked at this woman—my mate who’d been sold into marriage with her family’s murderer and transformed it into actual partnership. Who’d nearly died saving me and woke up building a better world. Who carried our daughter and ruled a fortress and made the impossible seem natural.

“I love you,” I said. “Have I mentioned that recently?”

“Not in three weeks. You were too busy being mostly dead.”

“Then let me make up for lost time.”

That night, after Nova finished her scheduled duties and I’d reviewed the changes she’d implemented, we finally had privacy in our chambers.

“I can’t believe you reformed the entire fortress power structure while pregnant and recovering from nearly dying.”

Nova shrugged, changing into sleeping clothes. “I was bored. And people needed leadership. You were unavailable.”

“Most people would rest after massive blood loss and magical trauma.”

“I’m not most people.”

“No. You’re absolutely not.”

I crossed to her, placing both hands on her swollen belly. Our daughter kicked immediately in response.

“Hello, little one,” I said. “I hear you saved both your parents. Thank you.”

Another kick, stronger.

“She’s active tonight,” Nova said. “I think she’s happy you’re back.”

“I’m happy I’m back. Though I still can’t believe you nearly died—”

“We’ve had this argument. I chose to save both you and her. It worked. Stop being angry about it.”

“I’m not angry. I’m terrified in retrospect.”

“Welcome to how I feel every day.” She cupped my face. “We survived, Dorian. All three of us. Against impossible odds. Isn’t that worth celebrating instead of dwelling on what could have gone wrong?”

She was right. As usual.

“You’re remarkably wise for someone who made incredibly reckless decisions.”

“I learned from the best.” Her smile turned wicked. “Now are you going to keep lecturing me, or are you going to properly welcome yourself back to the land of the living?”

I laughed. “What did you have in mind?”

“I’ve been seven months pregnant, running a fortress, and my mate was unavailable for three weeks. What do you think I have in mind?”

Making love while she was this pregnant required creativity and care. But we managed, both of us laughing and tender and celebrating being alive together.

Afterwards, lying tangled together, our daughter kicking between us, Nova spoke quietly.

“I thought I’d lost you. On that battlefield, with the king’s blade through your chest. I thought—” Her voice broke. “I thought our daughter would never know her father. That I’d have to raise her alone and tell her about the man you were becoming.”

“But you didn’t lose me. You refused to lose me.”

“We refused. Me and Aria. We both fought for you.”

I kissed her forehead. “My fierce girls. What did I do to deserve you?”

“Died for us. Came back for us. Built a world with us.” She traced the faint scar on my chest. “You’re stuck with us now. Forever.”

“I can think of worse fates.”

“Liar. We’re impossible.”

“You’re impossible. I’m perfectly reasonable.”

She snorted. “You died and came back as a fully hybrid vampire-wolf. Reasonable doesn’t apply to either of us anymore.”

Fair point.

We fell asleep like that—two hybrid beings who’d died and been resurrected, our miracle daughter between us, the fortress we’d transformed surrounding us.

Three weeks ago, I’d thought I was dying for the last time.

Now I was more alive than I’d been in centuries.

And it was all because Nova had refused to accept my death.

Had poured herself into saving me.

Had built a better world while I healed.

My mate. My equal. My impossible grace.

I’d spend the rest of our immortal lives being worthy of what she’d given me.

Starting with the next two months.

Building up to the day our daughter arrived.

The day our family became complete.

The day we’d finally meet the child who’d already saved us both.

Aria.

Our future.

Our proof that impossible things could happen when love refused to quit.

And she was almost here.

Just two more months.

Then everything would change again.

For the better.

I was certain.

Because with Nova beside me and our daughter on the way, how could it be anything else?
