The meeting with the vampire lords was scheduled for midnight in the grand hall—a massive room of black marble and vaulted ceilings that made me feel impossibly small.

I’d spent the week preparing with Sable, learning vampire etiquette and political hierarchies. There were five lords total, each ruling a different district of Nocturne. Kaian was the eldest and most powerful, which meant I’d be under the most scrutiny.

“Remember,” Sable coached as she helped me into a gown of deep silver that matched my eyes, “they’ll test you. Verbally. Don’t rise to obvious bait, but don’t be a doormat either. You’re Kaian’s equal, not his pet.”

“Comforting,” I muttered.

“You’ll be fine. You faced down an entire pack. Four ancient vampires should be easy.”

Kaian entered our chambers dressed in formal black, his crimson eyes taking in my appearance with obvious appreciation. “You look like moonlight given form.”

“I look terrified.”

“That too.” He crossed to me and took my hands. “But Lira—you’re a Moon Wolf blessed by the Mother herself. You’re bonded to me, which makes you untouchable. And more importantly—” His thumb brushed my wrist. “You’re stronger than all of them combined. They just don’t know it yet.”

The grand hall was already full when we arrived. Five vampire lords sat at a curved table on the raised platform, with dozens of vampire nobles filling the rest of the space. Every eye tracked me as Kaian and I walked to the center.

Lady Seraphina spoke first—elegant and deadly with silver-white hair. “So. Kaian has finally completed his legendary bond. We were starting to think it was a myth.”

“Very real, as you can see.” Kaian’s hand rested on my lower back. “May I present Lira, Moon Wolf and my eternal mate.”

Lord Vex leaned forward, his dark eyes assessing. “A wolf. How…unexpected. I thought your lost mate was human.”

“She was. Three hundred years ago. Before the curse scattered her across lifetimes.” Kaian’s voice was mild, but I felt his irritation through the bond. “She’s been reborn as what she was always meant to be—a Moon Wolf blessed by the Mother.”

“Fascinating.” Lady Morgana—young-looking but ancient in bearing—tilted her head. “And this bond—it’s truly complete? Blood exchanged?”

“Completely,” I answered before Kaian could. If I was going to be judged, I’d speak for myself. “I carry his blood and he carries mine. The bond is eternal.”

“How romantic.” Lord Dorian’s tone made it sound anything but. “And what does a wolf know of vampire politics? Of our ways and traditions?”

“Less than I should, admittedly.” I kept my voice level. “But I’m willing to learn. I’m also serving as liaison between wolf packs and vampire territories, which means I need to understand both sides.”

This caused murmurs among the assembled vampires.

“Liaison?” Lady Seraphina’s eyes narrowed. “The packs accepted a vampire-bonded wolf to represent them?”

“They accepted a Moon Wolf who understands their traditions and won’t betray their trust. The vampire bonding is—” I chose my words carefully. “A complication they’re willing to work around.”

“How magnanimous of them,” Lord Vex drawled. “And what makes you think you can negotiate on behalf of both species? You’re barely more than a child.”

My wolf growled low in my chest. Kaian’s hand tightened on my back—support, not restraint.

“I’m young,” I agreed. “But I’ve survived blood magic, bond manipulation, betrayal by my own twin, and a three-hundred-year curse. I’ve stood between my pack and my mate and chose both. I’m uniquely positioned to understand what both sides need.” I met each lord’s gaze in turn. “And I have something none of you have—the blessing of the Moon Mother herself.”

Power rippled through the room—my wolf surging forward enough to make my eyes glow silver. Several nobles stepped back.

“She’s powerful,” Lady Morgana murmured. “More than she should be for her age.”

“Twin bond suppression,” Kaian explained. “For twenty years her power was drained by a parasitic connection. Now that it’s severed, she’s accessing her full strength for the first time.”

“And how strong is that, exactly?” Lord Dorian stood, moving with predator grace to the edge of the platform. “Strong enough to stand with vampire lords? Or just another wolf playing at power?”

The challenge was clear. I could back down, let Kaian defend me, prove them right that I was too weak for this world.

Or I could show them exactly who I was.

I stepped forward, away from Kaian’s protective hand. “You want to know how strong I am?”

I let my wolf fully surface. Power exploded outward—silver light filling the hall, ancient and wild and touched by divinity. Every vampire in the room froze, caught in the presence of something older than their bloodlines.

The Moon Mother’s blessing.

“I am Lira Moonborn,” I said, my voice layered with my wolf’s power. “Blessed under the full moon. Marked by destiny. I have died and been reborn across lifetimes. I carry the strength of my ancestors and the blessing of the Mother herself.” I let my eyes blaze pure silver. “And I am bonded to your oldest lord, which makes me his equal. Question my right to be here again, and I’ll show you exactly what a blessed Moon Wolf can do.”

Silence. Absolute, stunned silence.

Then Lady Seraphina laughed—genuine delight in the sound. “Oh, I like her. Kaian, you’ve finally found someone with a spine. How refreshing.”

The tension in the room broke. Nobles started murmuring, some impressed, some intimidated. I pulled my wolf back, letting the power settle.

Lord Vex inclined his head slightly—acknowledgment, if not quite respect. “You’ve made your point, wolf. But words and power are easy. Let’s see if you can actually deliver on this liaison role.”

“What did you have in mind?” I asked.

What followed was three hours of political discussion that made my head spin. Border disputes between vampire territories and wolf packs, trade agreements that needed updating, ancient treaties that needed renegotiation. The lords tested me constantly—asking my opinion on complex situations, watching how I reasoned through problems.

I didn’t have all the answers. But I listened carefully, asked intelligent questions, and didn’t let them bully me into agreeing with things I thought were wrong.

By the time the meeting ended, I was exhausted but oddly exhilarated.

“You did well,” Lady Morgana said as people filed out. She’d stayed behind with the other lords. “Better than expected for your first formal introduction.”

“Thank you, my lady.”

“Don’t thank me yet.” Her smile was sharp. “You’ve made yourself a target. Some vampires won’t accept a wolf in their leadership circles, bond or no bond. They’ll test you. Undermine you. Possibly try to harm you.”

“Let them try.” Kaian’s voice was arctic. “Any vampire who touches my mate answers to me personally.”

“Easy, brother.” Lord Dorian used the term loosely—vampires of similar age often called each other that. “We’re not threatening her. Just warning. The wolf has enemies now. She should know it.”

“I appreciate the warning,” I said. “But I’ve dealt with enemies before. I’ll manage.”

Lady Seraphina studied me thoughtfully. “Yes. I believe you will. Kaian, you’ve chosen well. Your mate has fire.”

After the lords left, Kaian pulled me into his arms. “You were magnificent. Did you see Dorian’s face when you unleashed your wolf? Priceless.”

I laughed despite my exhaustion. “I think I’m going to have enemies on both sides now. Wolves who think I’m too vampire, vampires who think I’m too wolf.”

“Good.” He pressed a kiss to my temple. “Let them underestimate you. Makes it easier when you prove them wrong.”

As we walked back to our quarters, I thought about the future stretching before me. Centuries of navigating politics, mediating conflicts, standing between two worlds that didn’t quite trust each other.

It should have felt overwhelming.

Instead, it felt right.

This was my purpose. Who I was meant to be.

Not the weak twin or the stolen mate.

But the bridge between worlds.

And I was ready.
