Luna woke to the sound of Adrian’s voice in her head.

Not through their mate bond—this was something else entirely. She could hear his actual thoughts, as clearly as if he were lying beside her whispering directly into her ear.

The Council’s mobilizing three enforcement teams. Magnus is calling in favors from allied packs. They’re planning a coordinated strike on rogue settlements throughout the region.

Luna bolted upright in her narrow cot, her heart hammering as she processed what she was hearing. Through the cabin’s single window, she could see that dawn was still hours away. The Wildwood Community slept peacefully around her, unaware that their sanctuary was about to become a war zone.

Adrian? she sent through their normal bond.

Silence. Not the kind of silence that suggested he was ignoring her, but the deeper quiet that meant he was asleep. Which should have been impossible, since she’d just heard his voice talking about Council enforcement teams.

Luna pressed her fingers to her temples, trying to understand what was happening. The Eternal Claiming had strengthened their bond beyond anything she’d experienced before, but this felt different. More invasive. As if the magical ritual had torn down barriers between their minds that were supposed to exist.

They’re tracking supernatural signatures. Looking for concentrations of rogue wolves in remote areas. The Wildwood Community is on their target list.

Adrian’s mental voice again, but when Luna reached through their bond, she still found him sleeping. Dreaming, actually—she could sense the fragmented images playing through his unconscious mind.

Oh God, she realized with growing horror. I’m not hearing him talk to me. I’m hearing his thoughts.

The implications were staggering. If their bond had evolved to the point where she could access Adrian’s mind without his knowledge, what else might be changing? How deep did this connection go?

Luna threw on clothes and made her way quietly through the settlement toward Kaia’s cabin. If the Council was planning coordinated strikes on rogue communities, the Wildwood wolves needed to know immediately.

She found Kaia sitting by her fireplace, apparently awake despite the early hour. The silver-haired woman looked up as Luna entered, taking in her panicked expression with sharp attention.

“What’s wrong?” Kaia asked.

“The Council’s coming. Multiple enforcement teams, coordinated strikes on rogue settlements.” Luna sank into the chair across from Kaia, her hands shaking slightly. “They’re specifically targeting this community.”

“How do you know this?”

Luna hesitated, unsure how to explain what she’d experienced. “I can hear Adrian’s thoughts. Not through our normal bond—I mean I can actually access his mind while he’s sleeping.”

Kaia’s eyebrows rose. “That’s… not normal for mate bonds.”

“I know. The Eternal Claiming that Adrian performed—I think it did more than just make our connection unbreakable. I think it’s evolving into something unprecedented.”

“Can you control it? Turn it on and off?”

Luna closed her eyes and tentatively reached toward Adrian’s sleeping consciousness. Immediately, she was flooded with images from his dreams—memories of their first meeting, fragments of pack politics she didn’t understand, and underneath it all, a constant ache of missing her that made her chest tight.

He’s dreaming about me, she realized. About us. About finding a way to fix what went wrong between us.

“Luna?” Kaia’s voice seemed to come from very far away.

Luna opened her eyes to find the older woman watching her with concerned intensity. “Sorry. Yes, I can access it at will. But Kaia, the information about the Council raids—it’s coming from Adrian’s memories of a meeting he attended yesterday. Magnus briefed the allied alphas on their plans to eliminate rogue communities before they can become centers of resistance.”

“How much time do we have?”

“Two days, maybe three. They’re mobilizing resources from multiple regions.” Luna leaned forward urgently. “Kaia, they’re not just coming for me. They see every rogue community as a potential threat to their authority structure. This is going to be genocide disguised as law enforcement.”

Kaia was quiet for a long moment, her expression grim. “I need to call an emergency council meeting. The community has to decide whether to run, hide, or fight.”

“Is there somewhere safe you could evacuate to?”

“Safe is a relative concept when you’re talking about the Council’s enforcement divisions.” Kaia stood and began gathering supplies. “They have resources we can’t match—technology, numbers, official backing from traditional packs who fear change.”

“But?”

“But they don’t have what we have. Mobility, local knowledge, and the kind of desperation that comes from having nothing left to lose.” Kaia’s smile was sharp as winter frost. “Plus, now we have advance warning thanks to your supernatural eavesdropping abilities.”

Luna felt a chill at Kaia’s casual reference to her new powers. “This isn’t normal, is it? What’s happening between Adrian and me?”

“Honestly? I have no idea. Eternal Claiming rituals are theoretical for most of us—ancient magic that hasn’t been used in centuries.” Kaia paused at her door. “But Luna, if you can access Adrian’s thoughts without his knowledge, there’s a good chance he can access yours as well.”

The possibility hit Luna like a physical blow. All the private thoughts she’d had over the past few days, all the doubts and fears and moments of missing him—if Adrian could tap into her mind the way she was tapping into his…

He could know exactly how I feel about everything, she realized. My anger about his decision to perform the ritual, but also how much I love him despite that. How much I want to go home but feel like I can’t trust him with my autonomy.

“I need to test this,” Luna said, already moving toward the door.

“Luna, wait—”

But she was already outside, reaching through the enhanced bond toward Adrian’s consciousness with focused intent. Instead of accessing his dreams, she tried to send specific thoughts directly into his mind.

Adrian. Wake up. I know you can hear this.

For a moment, nothing happened. Then she felt him jolt awake with startled confusion, his consciousness suddenly alert and focused on their connection.

Luna? His mental voice was thick with sleep and surprise. How are you—this isn’t our normal bond.

No, it’s not. The Eternal Claiming created something new between us. I can hear your thoughts, and I suspect you can hear mine.

Even across the distance, she could sense his shock at the implications. How long has this been happening?

I don’t know. I just woke up with information from your memories about Council raid plans. Adrian, they’re targeting rogue communities. The Wildwood settlement is on their list.

She felt his emotions shift immediately from personal concerns to tactical analysis. When?

Two or three days. Multiple enforcement teams, coordinated strikes.

Jesus. Luna, you need to get out of there. Come home where I can protect you.

No. Her mental voice was firm despite the fear creeping through her system. I’m not running from this fight. These people offered me sanctuary when I needed it. I won’t abandon them to save myself.

Then I’m coming to you.

Adrian—

Don’t argue. If you’re determined to face Council enforcement teams, you’re not doing it without backup. His resolve flowed through their connection like steel. I can be at your location in six hours.

Luna wanted to argue, wanted to maintain the independence she’d been fighting for. But the practical part of her mind recognized that Kaia’s community was about to face professional killers with military-grade equipment. Having an experienced alpha on their side could mean the difference between survival and massacre.

Fine. But Adrian, when you get here—we’re not going back to the way things were. I’m not your Luna to be protected and controlled. I’m your equal partner, and if we’re going to fight together, it has to be as equals.

The emotion that came through their connection was so complex that Luna couldn’t parse all the components—relief, love, hope, fear, and something that might have been pride.

Equals, he agreed. Whatever happens next, we face it as equals.

Luna ended the connection and found Kaia watching her from the doorway with knowing eyes.

“He’s coming, isn’t he?” Kaia asked.

“In six hours. With whatever backup he can muster.” Luna met the older woman’s gaze directly. “I hope your community is ready for the kind of war that’s about to come to their doorstep.”

“Honey, we’ve been ready for war since the day we chose freedom over security.” Kaia’s smile was fierce with anticipation. “The question is whether the Council is ready for the kind of fight we’re about to give them.”

As dawn broke over the Wildwood Community, Luna found herself in the strange position of preparing for battle alongside wolves she’d known for less than twenty-four hours, while psychically coordinating with a mate she was still angry at but couldn’t seem to stop loving.

Through their enhanced bond, she could feel Adrian racing toward her location with single-minded determination. But she could also sense something else—other alphas responding to his calls for aid, pack members who were willing to risk Council retaliation to support the rogue community that had sheltered the Luna-born.

The revolution I started with that broadcast, Luna realized. It’s not just about exposing Council corruption anymore. It’s about choosing what kind of world we want to live in.

In the growing daylight, she watched the Wildwood Community prepare for siege with the kind of organized efficiency that came from years of expecting the worst. These wolves had chosen independence knowing it might cost them their lives, and they faced that possibility with grim determination.

Luna touched the space where the Luna Crown had been, feeling its power still humming beneath her skin. She’d started this conflict by telling the truth. Now she had to finish it by proving that the future could be different from the past.

Through the psychic link, she felt Adrian’s love and determination flowing toward her like a beacon. Whatever mistakes he’d made, whatever trust issues still existed between them, right now he was racing to stand beside her in the fight for everything they both believed in.
