The challenge came at the worst possible moment.

Luna and Adrian stood in the center of the ceremonial circle, surrounded by representatives from dozens of packs who had gathered to witness the eclipse bonding. The blood moon hung directly overhead, casting everything in crimson light that made the ancient ritual space feel otherworldly.

Magnus Hale had been bound and silenced, his authority stripped after the failed assault on the Wildwood Community. The Council’s remaining members were under guard, awaiting judgment from the newly formed coalition of free packs. Everything was ready for the ceremony that would transform Luna and Adrian into something unprecedented.

Then Garrett Stone stepped into the circle.

The scarred warrior Luna had defeated during her original trials looked different now—harder, more desperate, with the kind of focused intensity that suggested he’d spent weeks preparing for this moment. Behind him came three other alphas Luna didn’t recognize, their presence radiating barely controlled aggression.

“I invoke ancient right of challenge,” Garrett announced formally, his voice carrying clearly in the still air. “Luna Maren stands unmarked and unclaimed under supernatural law. I demand the right to compete for bonding privileges.”

Luna felt ice water flooding her veins. “The Eternal Claiming—”

“Was performed without proper witnesses or pack authorization,” one of the unknown alphas said with obvious satisfaction. “Under traditional law, it constitutes an illegal binding that can be dissolved through formal challenge.”

Adrian moved to stand protectively in front of Luna, his golden eyes blazing with fury. “She’s my mate. Any challenge to that bond is a challenge to me personally.”

“Exactly,” Garrett said with a smile that showed too many teeth. “Trial by combat, alpha against alpha. Winner takes the female.”

“I’m not a prize to be won,” Luna snarled, her Luna authority making the air itself seem to vibrate.

“Under pack law, unmated females can be claimed through combat victory,” the third challenger said dismissively. “Your wishes are irrelevant to the legal proceedings.”

Luna felt her wolf rising to the surface with homicidal fury. These males were talking about her like she was property, reducing her to a breeding prize to be awarded to whoever could win a fight.

But through their psychic link, she could sense Adrian’s tactical analysis of the situation. Four alphas, all of them experienced warriors. Combat challenges that would be fought to the death or surrender. And Luna legally unable to refuse whoever emerged victorious.

It’s a trap, Adrian’s mental voice reached her across their private connection. Magnus arranged this before he was captured. Even if I defeat all four challengers, the combat will leave me too damaged to complete the eclipse bonding safely.

And if you lose?

Then you become the property of whoever kills me.

Luna looked around the ceremonial circle at the faces of wolves who’d risked everything to support her revolution. Some looked angry at this disruption of the planned ceremony. Others looked resigned, as if they’d expected the traditionalists to find some way to reassert control.

But it was Kaia’s expression that caught Luna’s attention. The rogue leader was staring at the challengers with something that looked like recognition.

She knows something, Luna realized. Something about why these specific alphas are here.

Through her enhanced connection to the supernatural network, Luna reached out to touch Kaia’s mind directly. What she found there made her blood run cold.

These aren’t random challengers. They’re Council allies who’ve been promised territory and political power in exchange for eliminating Adrian and claiming me.

The scope of Magnus’s planning was staggering. Even captured and bound, he’d managed to set in motion events that would destroy everything Luna and Adrian had built together.

“I accept the challenges,” Adrian said formally, beginning to strip off his shirt in preparation for shifting to wolf form.

“All of them?” Garrett asked with obvious surprise. “Alpha, combat challenges are traditionally fought one-on-one—”

“Traditional challenges are for traditional prizes,” Adrian replied, his voice carrying the kind of deadly calm that preceded extreme violence. “You’re challenging my right to my Eternal Claimed mate. That puts all of you in the category of enemies to be eliminated, not honorable opponents to be faced individually.”

Luna felt her chest tight with pride and terror in equal measure. Adrian was choosing to face four experienced alphas simultaneously rather than risk her being claimed by any of them. It was magnificent and suicidal and exactly the kind of gesture that made her love him more than she could rationally explain.

“Don’t do this,” she sent through their private link. “There has to be another way.”

“There is. You can reject our bond entirely and disappear before the combat begins.” Adrian’s mental voice was steady despite the emotion bleeding through their connection. “Let me face this alone, and whatever happens, you’ll be free to make your own choices.”

“And leave you to die for my independence? Never.”

“Then trust me to win.”

Luna wanted to argue, wanted to find some legal loophole or supernatural technicality that would invalidate the challenges. But she could see from the expressions of the gathered pack representatives that combat was inevitable. Too many traditionalists had been waiting for an opportunity to reassert the old power structures.

Adrian shifted into his wolf form with fluid grace—a massive creature of dark fur and golden eyes whose presence seemed to fill the entire ceremonial circle. Even outnumbered four to one, he radiated the kind of confidence that had made him one of the most respected alphas in North America.

The challengers shifted as well, and Luna found herself watching four wolves circle the man she loved with predatory intent. They were all large, all experienced, all moving with the kind of coordinated precision that suggested they’d planned this assault carefully.

They’re not just trying to win, Luna realized with growing horror. They’re trying to kill him.

The first attack came from behind—Garrett lunging toward Adrian’s hindquarters while the other three alphas positioned themselves to prevent escape. But Adrian had been anticipating the maneuver, spinning with inhuman speed to catch Garrett’s throat in his jaws.

For a moment, Luna thought the fight might end before it really began. Then the second alpha hit Adrian from the side, powerful jaws clamping down on his shoulder while the third and fourth attackers went for his legs.

Blood flew in the crimson moonlight as five wolves became a single writhing mass of claws and fangs. Luna could hear Adrian’s snarls of pain and fury, could smell the scent of his blood mixing with that of his opponents.

Through their psychic link, she experienced every moment of the battle from Adrian’s perspective—the burning agony of claws raking across his ribs, the desperate strength required to throw off an attacker while fighting two others, the growing exhaustion that came from facing multiple opponents simultaneously.

He’s losing, Luna realized with sick certainty. He’s stronger than any individual challenger, but not stronger than all four working together.

One of the unknown alphas managed to get past Adrian’s defenses, powerful jaws closing around his back leg with enough force to snap bone. Adrian’s howl of pain echoed across the valley, and Luna felt his agony through their bond like her own limb had been broken.

“Luna,” his mental voice reached her through waves of pain and exhaustion. “If I don’t survive this, remember what we planned. The eclipse bonding—find another way to access that power.”

“You’re not going to die.” Luna was already moving toward the edge of the combat circle, though she wasn’t sure what she planned to do. “I won’t let you die for me.”

“Stay back. If you interfere with the combat, they’ll declare the challenges void and claim you automatically.”

Luna forced herself to stop, her hands clenched into fists as she watched the wolves she loved being torn apart by opponents who saw him as nothing more than an obstacle to their political ambitions.

There has to be something I can do, she thought desperately. Some way to help him without invalidating the combat.

Through her connection to the supernatural network, Luna reached out to touch the minds of every wolf present. What she found there gave her an idea that was either brilliant or completely insane.

Ancient law works both ways, she realized. If they can use old traditions to justify these challenges, I can use older traditions to change the rules.

Luna stepped to the very edge of the combat circle and called out in a voice that carried across dimensions:

“I invoke Sanctuary Right under the oldest laws. As Luna-born, I claim the protection of the ancient compact between the first packs and the moon herself.”

The effect was immediate. Every wolf in the ceremonial space froze as power older than civilization flowed through Luna’s words. Even the combatants stopped fighting, held in place by magic that predated the Council by millennia.

“Sanctuary Right grants Luna-born the power to end combat through divine intervention,” Luna continued, her voice carrying harmonics that made reality itself seem to tremble. “I call upon the moon’s blessing to reveal the truth behind these challenges.”

Silver light began to emanate from Luna’s skin, growing brighter until she seemed to glow like a star in the crimson darkness. Through the supernatural network, she could sense every lie, every hidden motivation, every secret alliance among the wolves present.

And what she found was exactly what she’d suspected.

“These challenges were arranged by the Council before Magnus’s capture,” Luna announced, her voice carrying to every supernatural being within miles. “The challengers were promised territory and power in exchange for eliminating Adrian Blackthorn and delivering me to Council custody.”

Murmurs of anger rippled through the gathered pack representatives. Even traditionalists who supported the right of challenge were appalled by the revelation of Council manipulation.

“Furthermore,” Luna continued, letting the ancient power flow through her voice, “two of the challengers have been enhanced with Council technology. Chemical modifications designed to increase their strength and speed beyond natural limits.”

That revelation caused outright uproar. Enhancement of combat challengers was forbidden under every tradition of supernatural law. If true, it would invalidate the challenges entirely.

Luna gestured, and silver light flowed from her hands toward the two enhanced alphas. Where the light touched them, artificial modifications became visible—surgical scars, implanted devices, chemical residues that glowed with unnatural phosphorescence.

“Cheaters and Council puppets,” Kaia called out with obvious disgust. “This whole challenge was a fraud from the beginning.”

The pack representatives were calling for the challengers to be bound and questioned when Adrian, still in wolf form and bleeding from multiple wounds, collapsed at Luna’s feet.

“Too much damage,” his mental voice whispered weakly. “Even with the challenges invalidated, I’m not going to heal from this quickly.”

Luna dropped to her knees beside him, her hands glowing with healing power she didn’t know she possessed. But she could feel through their bond that Adrian’s injuries were extensive—broken bones, internal bleeding, damage that would take weeks to heal naturally.

And we only have hours before the eclipse ends, she realized. If we don’t complete the bonding tonight, we’ll have to wait nineteen years for another opportunity.

“Then maybe we’re not meant to—” Adrian’s thoughts cut off as he lost consciousness, his massive wolf form going limp against the ground.

Luna looked up at the blood eclipse hanging overhead, then at the faces of wolves who were counting on her to be stronger than her circumstances.

She had to make a choice. Let Adrian heal naturally and abandon the eclipse bonding, or find a way to complete the ritual with him unconscious and dying.
