Six months after Leo’s third birthday, Liam started acting weird.

Secretive phone calls. Mysterious errands. A knowing smile whenever Tessa asked what he was up to.

“You’re planning something,” she accused one morning over coffee.

“Maybe.”

“Liam.”

“Tessa.” He grinned. “Trust me. You’ll like it.”

“Is it illegal?”

“What? No.”

“Dangerous?”

“Definitely not.”

“Expensive?”

He paused. “Moderately.”

“Liam Thorne, what are you planning?”

“You’ll see. This weekend. Rose is taking Leo overnight. We’re—we’re going somewhere.”

“Where?”

“That’s the surprise part.”

Tessa threw a dish towel at him. He caught it, laughing.

“You’re impossible,” she said.

“You love me.”

“Debatable.”

“Liar.”

He was right. She did love him. So much it sometimes scared her. But the good kind of scared. The butterflies-in-your-stomach, can’t-wait-to-see-what-happens-next kind of scared.

That Saturday, Liam drove them two hours north to a cabin in the mountains.

“This is where you’re planning to murder me?” Tessa joked as they pulled up.

“If I was going to murder you, I wouldn’t rent such a nice cabin first.”

The cabin was beautiful. Rustic but elegant. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a lake. A fireplace. A bedroom with a massive bed covered in soft blankets.

“Liam, this is—this is gorgeous.”

“Wait until you see the deck.”

He led her out back. The deck wrapped around the entire cabin, with a hot tub, outdoor fireplace, and a view that made Tessa’s breath catch.

“Oh my god.”

“I know, right? I found it a few months ago. Thought—thought we could use a getaway. Just us. No Leo. No work. No—no stress. Just us.”

Tessa turned to him. “This is the surprise? A romantic cabin weekend?”

“Part of it.”

“What’s the other part?”

“You’ll see. Tonight.” He pulled her close. “But first—hot tub? Wine? Pretending the real world doesn’t exist for forty-eight hours?”

“That sounds perfect.”

They spent the afternoon exactly as planned. Hot tub. Wine. No phones. No stress. Just—just them.

It was perfect. Better than perfect.

“I needed this,” Tessa said, her head resting on Liam’s shoulder as they watched the sunset from the deck. “I didn’t realize how much I needed this.”

“Me too. I love Leo. Love our life. But sometimes—sometimes I miss this. Just us. Talking. Being. No interruptions.”

“We should do this more often.”

“Agreed. Maybe monthly? We can make it a tradition. Rose loves babysitting. And we—we need to remember we’re not just parents. We’re also—also us.”

“Us,” Tessa repeated. “I like us.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah.”

As the sun set, Liam stood. “Come on. I want to show you something.”

He led her inside to the fireplace, where he’d set up candles, rose petals, and—

“Is that champagne?”

“The good stuff.” He poured two glasses, handed her one. “I want to make a toast.”

“Okay…”

“To second chances. To—to finding each other again. To building something real. Something permanent. Something—something worth everything.”

They clinked glasses. Drank. And then Liam set his glass down and got down on one knee.

Tessa’s heart stopped.

“Oh my god.”

“Tessa Brooks.” Liam pulled out a ring box. “I’ve loved you since college. Spent two years trying to forget you. Then spent the past year realizing I don’t want to forget. I want to remember. Want to build. Want to—want to spend the rest of my life making you happy.”

Tears streamed down her face.

“You gave me Leo. Gave me a family. Gave me—gave me everything I never knew I wanted. And I want to give you the same. Want to be your husband. Want to wake up next to you every morning. Want to—want to build a life with you. Forever. So—” He opened the box, revealing a stunning diamond ring. “Will you marry me?”

“Yes.” The word came out as a sob. “Yes, yes, yes. Of course yes.”

He slid the ring on her finger with shaking hands. Then stood, pulling her into his arms, kissing her like they had all the time in the world.

“We’re getting married,” he whispered against her lips.

“We’re getting married,” she agreed.

“I love you so much.”

“I love you too.”

They stood there, holding each other, the fireplace crackling, the champagne forgotten.

This was real. This was happening. They were getting married.

Tessa looked at the ring on her finger—sparkling in the firelight—and felt something settle in her chest.

She was engaged. To Liam. The father of her child. The love of her life. The man who’d waited for her. Who’d—who’d fought for her when she didn’t know how to fight for herself.

“When?” she asked suddenly.

“When what?”

“When do you want to get married?”

Liam smiled. “Whenever you want. Tomorrow. Next year. Ten years from now. I’m not in a rush. I just—I just want you to be my wife. Eventually.”

“What about this summer? Small ceremony. Just family and close friends. Nothing fancy. Just—just us promising forever.”

“This summer sounds perfect.”

“Really?”

“Really. I’ve waited years for you, Tessa. What’s a few more months?” He kissed her forehead. “Besides, we should probably tell Leo first. And Julian. And—and actually plan a wedding.”

“Leo’s going to be so excited.”

“Think he’ll want to be in the wedding?”

“Are you kidding? He’ll insist on it. Probably demand to walk me down the aisle.”

Liam laughed. “I love that kid.”

“I love him too. And I love you. And I—I can’t believe this is my life. That I get—get all of this.”

“Believe it. Because you’re stuck with me now. Officially.”

“Good. I don’t want to be unstuck.”

They made love by the fireplace. Slow and tender and full of promise. And afterward, wrapped in blankets, Tessa stared at her ring and let herself believe it.

She was getting married. Building a life. Creating—creating forever with the man she’d loved for years.

It was terrifying. Overwhelming. Perfect.

And she couldn’t wait.

The next morning, they called everyone.

Rose cried. Julian laughed and said “about damn time.” Leo screamed “PARTY!” until they explained it wasn’t happening immediately.

“But I want Mama and Daddy to get married NOW,” he pouted.

“Soon, buddy,” Liam promised. “This summer. And you—you get to be in the wedding. Ring bearer. Very important job.”

Leo’s eyes went wide. “Really?”

“Really. You’ll wear a tiny suit. Carry the rings. Be the star of the show.”

“I’m gonna be the BEST ring bearer EVER!”

After they hung up, Tessa looked at Liam. “We’re really doing this.”

“We are. Having regrets already?”

“Not even a little bit.” She kissed him. “Just—just overwhelmed. In a good way. This time last year, I was still hiding from you. Still lying about Leo. Still—still running. And now we’re engaged. Planning a wedding. Building forever. It’s—it’s a lot.”

“Good lot or bad lot?”

“The best lot.”

“Then let’s enjoy it. Every second. Because Tessa—this is just the beginning. We have—have a whole lifetime ahead of us. And I can’t wait to live it with you.”

“Me neither.”

They spent the rest of the weekend in their perfect cabin, planning their future, making love, and just—just being. Together. Engaged. In love.

And when they drove home Sunday evening to pick up Leo, Tessa felt—felt complete.

She had everything she’d ever wanted. Everything she’d spent years running from.

And this time, she wasn’t running.

She was staying. Building. Choosing.

Forever.

And it was perfect.
