Tessa’s water broke at 3 AM. Two weeks before her due date.

“Liam.” She shook him awake. “Liam, it’s time.”

He shot upright. “Time? Like, baby time?”

“Yes. My water just broke. We need to go.”

Ten minutes of controlled chaos. Grabbing the hospital bag. Calling Rose to come get Leo. Getting in the car.

“Breathe,” Liam said, gripping the steering wheel.

“I am breathing.”

“I meant me. I’m—I’m freaking out.”

Despite the contractions, Tessa laughed. “You’re freaking out? I’m the one in labor.”

“I know. But last time, I missed this. Missed everything. And now I’m here and you’re having our baby and I’m—I’m terrified I’ll mess something up.”

“You won’t. Just—just be here. That’s all I need.”

At the hospital, everything moved fast. Check-in. Labor room. Doctors and nurses and machines beeping.

“You’re at six centimeters,” the nurse said. “Baby should be here in a few hours.”

A few hours. Their daughter would be here in a few hours.

Liam held Tessa’s hand through every contraction. Counted her through breathing. Whispered encouragement.

“You’re amazing,” he said.

“I’m sweaty and in pain.”

“Still amazing.”

At 8:47 AM, after five hours of labor, Emma Rose Thorne entered the world.

Tiny. Pink. Screaming.

“She’s perfect,” the doctor said, placing her on Tessa’s chest.

Tessa stared at her daughter—their daughter—and burst into tears. “Hi, baby girl. Hi.”

Liam was crying too. “She’s so small.”

“Six pounds, three ounces,” the nurse announced. “Perfectly healthy.”

They spent the next hour in a bubble. Just the three of them. Tessa. Liam. Emma.

A family.

“I can’t believe she’s real,” Liam whispered, touching Emma’s tiny hand.

“She’s ours.”

“Ours,” he agreed.

Rose brought Leo to visit that afternoon. He stood at the edge of the hospital bed, staring at his sister with wide eyes.

“That’s the baby?”

“That’s your sister,” Tessa said. “Emma. Want to meet her?”

Leo climbed carefully onto the bed. Looked at Emma. Wrinkled his nose. “She’s really small.”

“You were small once too.”

“Can she play trucks?”

“Not yet. But when she’s bigger, you can teach her.”

Leo touched Emma’s tiny fist. “Hi, Emma. I’m your big brother. I’m going to protect you from monsters and teach you about trucks and—and be the best big brother ever.”

Emma yawned.

“She likes me!” Leo said excitedly.

“Of course she does. You’re her big brother.”

Rose was crying. Julian (who’d shown up with Madison) was crying. Liam was still crying.

Everyone was crying.

“Welcome to the family, Emma,” Julian said softly.

They brought Emma home two days later.

The house was transformed. Pink decorations. Balloons. A “Welcome Home Emma” banner Leo had made.

“You did all this?” Tessa asked Rose.

“Leo helped. He was very insistent about the balloons.”

That first week home was exhausting. Sleepless nights. Constant feedings. Learning Emma’s cries.

But also beautiful. Watching Liam change diapers. Watching Leo gently hold his sister. Watching their family grow.

“I’m so tired,” Tessa said one night at 2 AM, feeding Emma.

Liam appeared in the doorway. “Want me to take her? You should sleep.”

“You’ve been up all night too.”

“I don’t care. You just gave birth. Rest.”

He took Emma, cradling her expertly. Started pacing the room, humming softly.

Tessa watched them—her husband and daughter—and felt her heart swell.

“I love you,” she said.

“I love you too. Now sleep. Before she’s hungry again.”

She did. Fell asleep to the sound of Liam singing lullabies. And when she woke three hours later, he was still pacing. Still holding Emma. Still singing.

“Did you sleep at all?” she asked.

“She’s too perfect to put down.”

“Liam—”

“I know. I will. Soon. I just—I missed this with Leo. And I don’t want to miss a single second with her.”

Tessa understood. God, she understood.

“Then we’ll take shifts. You hold her now. I’ll take the next feeding. We’ll—we’ll do it together.”

“Together,” he agreed.

Two weeks after Emma’s birth, Julian showed up with news.

“I’m engaged.”

Tessa almost dropped Emma. “What?”

“Madison and I. We’re engaged. I proposed last night.”

“Jules! That’s amazing!”

“I know. I was going to wait. Be traditional. But life’s too short. And watching you and Liam—watching you build this family—I realized I want that too. With her. So I asked. And she said yes.”

“I’m so happy for you.”

“Thanks. And Tess? Thank you.”

“For what?”

“For showing me it’s possible. To fall apart and put yourself back together. To screw up and fix it. To—to build something real. You and Liam—you did that. And you inspired me to try too.”

She hugged him tight. “You deserve happiness, Jules.”

“So do you. And look at you. Married. Two kids. Living your best life. I’m proud of you, Tess.”

“I’m proud of you too.”

He stayed for dinner. Held Emma. Played trucks with Leo. Announced his engagement to Rose, who cried (again).

And watching her twin brother—her best friend—glowing with happiness, Tessa felt complete.

They’d come so far. Both of them. From that awful fight three years ago to—to this. Both engaged. Both building families. Both—both happy.

Really, truly happy.

“Life’s good,” Julian said as he left.

“Life’s perfect,” Tessa agreed.

And it was. Despite the exhaustion. Despite the chaos. Despite the sleepless nights and endless diaper changes and constant feedings.

It was perfect.

Because she had Liam. Had Leo. Had Emma. Had Julian back. Had—had everything.

Her family. Complete. Happy. Hers.

Forever.
