Leo called from college with news.

“I met someone.”

Tessa almost dropped her coffee. “You what?”

“Met someone. A girl. Her name’s Sarah. She’s—she’s amazing, Mom.”

“Tell me everything.”

She heard the smile in his voice. “She’s in my philosophy class. Smart. Funny. Beautiful. We’ve been dating for two months and I—I really like her.”

“Two months and you’re just now telling me?”

“I wanted to make sure it was real first. But Mom—it is. It’s really real.”

Tessa’s heart swelled. “I’m so happy for you, honey.”

“She wants to meet you. Over break. Is that okay?”

“Of course! Bring her for Thanksgiving. We’d love to meet her.”

After they hung up, Tessa told Liam.

“Our baby has a girlfriend.”

“He’s twenty. Not a baby anymore.”

“He’ll always be my baby.”

Thanksgiving came. Leo brought Sarah home. She was lovely. Sweet. Smart. Perfect for him.

“Your home is beautiful,” Sarah said, looking around.

“It’s chaos,” Tessa laughed. “But it’s home.”

Dinner was the usual madness. Emma and Jack arguing. Julian and Madison’s kids running wild. But Sarah fit right in.

“This is nice,” she said to Leo. “Your family. They’re—they’re really close.”

“Yeah. They are. Is it too much?”

“Not at all. I love it. My family’s quiet. Just me and my mom. This is—this is different. But good different.”

Watching Leo with Sarah, Tessa saw it. The same look Liam used to give her. The same nervous energy. The same—same love.

“He’s in love with her,” Tessa whispered to Liam.

“I know. Reminds me of us.”

“Think it’ll last?”

“If it’s anything like us? Absolutely.”

Emma started dating too. A boy from her class. Sweet kid. Respectful.

“His name’s Tyler,” she announced at dinner.

“Tyler?” Liam’s protective dad mode activated. “How old is this Tyler?”

“Fifteen. Same as me. Don’t be weird about it.”

“I’m not being weird—”

“You’re totally being weird.”

“Liam,” Tessa warned. “Let it go.”

“I just want to meet him. Make sure he’s—”

“If you finish that sentence, I’m grounding you,” Emma said.

Julian laughed. “Karma’s real, man. Remember when you dated Tess and I lost it? Now you’re the overprotective parent.”

“That’s different—”

“It’s exactly the same.”

Liam grumbled but backed off. And when Tyler came over for dinner the next week, he was polite. Kind. Clearly nervous.

“It’s nice to meet you, sir,” he said, shaking Liam’s hand.

“You too. Treat my daughter right.”

“I will, sir.”

After Tyler left, Emma hugged Liam. “Thanks for not being too embarrassing.”

“I was very cool.”

“You interrogated him about his intentions.”

“That’s what dads do.”

“You’re ridiculous. But I love you.”

“Love you too, princess.”

Jack was the holdout. No dating. No interest.

“I’m too busy for girls,” he said. “I have video games to play.”

“You’re fourteen,” Tessa said. “You should be thinking about girls.”

“Why? They’re annoying.”

“You used to think trucks were the only important thing. Now you think video games are. Eventually, you’ll discover girls.”

“Gross.”

Liam laughed. “Give him time. He’ll come around.”

“I won’t,” Jack insisted.

But Tessa knew better. Eventually, Jack would fall for someone. Just like Leo had. Just like Emma. Just like—like all of them.

Love was inevitable. Messy. Beautiful. Worth it.

And watching her kids navigate it—watching them find their people—was the greatest gift.

They’d make mistakes. Get their hearts broken. Learn. Grow.

Just like she had. Just like—like everyone did.

But they’d be okay. Because they had family. Had support. Had—had love.

Real love. The kind that stayed. The kind that fought. The kind that—that chose.

Every day.

Forever.

Just like she’d taught them.
