Leo called during his senior year of college.
“I’m going to propose to Sarah.”
Tessa almost dropped the phone. “What?!”
“I know it’s fast. We’ve only been together two years. But Mom—she’s it. She’s my person. I don’t want to wait.”
“Two years isn’t fast, honey. Your dad and I had a baby after one night.”
Leo laughed. “Fair point. So you think I should do it?”
“I think if you love her—really love her—then yes. Absolutely. Life’s too short to wait.”
“That’s what I thought. I’m proposing over spring break. At the beach. Where we had our first date.”
“That’s perfect. Do you have a ring?”
“Not yet. I was hoping—hoping maybe Dad could help? Give me advice?”
“He’d love that. Hold on.”
She handed the phone to Liam. Watched his face light up as Leo asked for help picking a ring.
“Of course I’ll help, buddy. When do you want to go shopping?”
They spent an entire afternoon ring shopping. Came home with the perfect one.
“He’s really doing this,” Liam said that evening. “Our son is getting married.”
“We raised him right. He found his person. He’s choosing her. That’s—that’s what we taught him.”
“Still feels surreal.”
“I know. But also perfect.”
Leo proposed over spring break. Sarah said yes. They came home engaged and glowing.
“We’re getting married!” Sarah announced, showing off her ring.
Tessa hugged them both. “I’m so happy for you!”
“Will you help me plan?” Sarah asked. “I’ve never done this before and you—you’re so good at it.”
“Of course! We’ll plan the perfect wedding. What are you thinking? Big? Small?”
“Small. Intimate. Like yours and Liam’s.”
“You know about our wedding?”
“Leo showed me pictures. It was beautiful. That’s what I want.”
Tessa and Sarah spent the next month planning. Venue. Flowers. Food. All of it.
“This is fun,” Sarah said. “I never had a mom to do this with.”
Tessa’s heart squeezed. “Well, you do now. If—if you want.”
“I do. You’re amazing. And I’m so grateful Leo has you. Has this family. It’s—it’s everything I always wanted.”
“You’re part of this family now too.”
Sarah’s eyes filled with tears. “Thank you. For welcoming me. For—for loving Leo. For raising him to be the man he is. He’s incredible. And that’s because of you and Liam.”
“He’s incredible because he’s him. We just—just supported him. The rest was all Leo.”
The wedding was in June. Small. Beautiful. Perfect.
Leo cried when he saw Sarah walking down the aisle. Just like Liam had cried at their wedding.
“I, Leo, choose you,” he said in his vows. “Every day. Forever. You’re my person. My home. My everything.”
Tessa sobbed through the entire ceremony.
“He learned that from us,” Liam whispered.
“I know. We did good.”
“We did amazing.”
At the reception, Leo pulled Tessa aside.
“Thank you, Mom.”
“For what?”
“For everything. For—for raising me. For showing me what love looks like. For giving me this family. For—for all of it. I wouldn’t be here without you.”
“You’d be exactly where you’re supposed to be. With Sarah. Happy. In love. That’s all you.”
“It’s all of us. You. Dad. This family. Everything you taught me about choosing each other. About fighting for love. About—about building something real. I learned that from you. And I’m using it with Sarah. To build our forever.”
Tessa was full-on crying now. “I’m so proud of you.”
“I’m proud of you too, Mom. You and Dad—you could’ve given up. When things got hard. When you were apart. When everything was complicated. But you didn’t. You chose each other. And that—that taught me everything I needed to know about love.”
They hugged. And Tessa thought about that night twenty-two years ago. The night that started all of this.
She’d thought it was a disaster. A mistake. The worst thing that could happen.
But it wasn’t. It was the best thing. The thing that led to Leo. To Liam. To—to all of this.
This family. This love. This life.
“Go,” she said, wiping her eyes. “Dance with your wife. Start your forever.”
“Thanks, Mom. For everything.”
She watched him dance with Sarah. Watched her son—her baby—start his own journey. His own love story. His own—own forever.
And she was grateful. For all of it. Every choice. Every moment. Every—everything.
Because it led here. To this. To watching her son find the same happiness she’d found.
And that was more than enough.
That was everything.
