Liam stayed for three hours.

Three hours of playing trucks with Leo. Three hours of watching his son with wonder in his eyes. Three hours of Tessa’s heart breaking and healing all at once.

When Leo finally crashed for his afternoon nap, exhausted from showing off all his toys, Liam and Tessa sat on the couch in awkward silence.

“He’s incredible,” Liam said finally.

“He is.”

“Smart. Funny. So much energy.” He smiled. “Gets that from you.”

“The stubbornness is all you.”

Liam laughed. Actually laughed. “Fair.”

More silence. Then: “We need to tell Julian. Soon.”

Tessa’s stomach twisted. “I know.”

“I’m thinking this weekend. I’ll fly you both back. We’ll tell him together. Face to face.”

“He’s going to hate me.”

“He’s going to hate both of us. But he’ll get over it. Eventually.” Liam didn’t sound convinced. “He has to.”

“What if he doesn’t?”

“Then we deal with that too. Together.” He reached for her hand. “I meant what I said earlier, Tessa. We’re in this together now. No more running. No more secrets. Just—just us. Figuring it out.”

Tessa looked at their joined hands. “I’m scared.”

“Me too. But I’m not losing you again. Or him. So we face Julian. We face whatever happens. And we—we build something. For Leo. For us.”

“You really meant it? About wanting to try? With me?”

“Every word.” His thumb traced circles on her palm. “I’ve wanted you for years, Tessa. And now I have a son with you. A family. I’m not walking away from that. Not unless you tell me to.”

“I don’t want you to walk away.”

“Then I won’t.”

He leaned in slowly, giving her time to pull back. She didn’t. His lips met hers in a kiss that was gentle and hesitant and full of promise.

When they pulled apart, Tessa was crying again.

“We’re going to be okay,” Liam whispered. “All three of us. I promise.”

She wanted to believe him. God, she wanted to believe him.

She just hoped he was right.

Three days later, Tessa found herself on a plane to her old city, Leo sleeping on her lap, Liam beside her looking as nervous as she felt.

“What if he hits you?” Tessa asked for the third time.

“Then I deserve it.”

“Liam—”

“I kept this from him too. The second I found out about Leo, I should’ve told Julian. Instead, I waited three days. I’m just as guilty as you.”

“You waited because I asked you to.”

“Doesn’t matter. He’s my best friend. And I lied to him.” Liam squeezed her hand. “We both did. Now we fix it.”

Julian was waiting at Liam’s apartment when they arrived. Tessa’s heart hammered as they walked in, Leo clinging to her, eyeing Julian with the same wariness he’d shown Liam.

“Tess!” Julian’s face lit up. Then he saw Liam. Saw the way Liam stood close to Tessa. Saw the toddler in her arms. His smile faded. “What’s going on?”

“We need to talk,” Tessa said quietly.

“About?”

“About why I left. About—about everything.”

Julian’s eyes narrowed. “This is about him, isn’t it?” He gestured to Leo. “Your neighbor’s kid you babysit? Except that was bullshit, wasn’t it? He’s yours.”

“Yes.”

“And his father? The guy who ‘didn’t work out’? Let me guess. Also bullshit.”

Tessa’s throat tightened. “Jules—”

“Just tell me. Tell me the truth for once. Who’s his father?”

Silence. Heavy and suffocating.

Then Liam stepped forward. “Me. I’m his father.”

The color drained from Julian’s face. “What?”

“His name is Leo. He’s two years old. And he’s my son.”

Julian stared. At Liam. At Tessa. At the little boy who had Liam’s eyes and hair. “You—you two—”

“Three years ago,” Tessa said quickly. “At that end-of-year party. We—we made a mistake. And I got pregnant. And I didn’t tell anyone because I was scared and—”

“You were scared?” Julian’s voice rose. “You were scared so you disappeared for two years? So you kept my nephew from me? So you—you lied to my face every time we talked?”

“I’m sorry—”

“Sorry? You’re sorry?” He turned to Liam. “And you. You knew about this for what, a week? And you didn’t tell me?”

“Three days,” Liam said quietly. “I found out three days ago. And I wanted to tell you immediately, but Tessa asked for time to—”

“To what? Come up with a better lie?” Julian laughed bitterly. “My best friend and my sister. Jesus Christ. How long was it going on? How long were you sneaking around behind my back?”

“It wasn’t like that,” Tessa protested. “It was one night. One mistake. We weren’t—we didn’t plan—”

“But you had a baby! You had my nephew and you didn’t tell me!” Julian’s voice cracked. “Do you have any idea what that feels like? Finding out like this? Finding out my twin sister has been lying to me for years?”

“I know I hurt you—”

“Hurt me? You destroyed me, Tess. When you left, when you stopped calling, when you—when you shut me out completely—I thought I’d done something wrong. Thought you hated me. Thought—” He stopped, his jaw clenching. “And the whole time, you were hiding this. Hiding him.”

Leo whimpered, pressing his face into Tessa’s shoulder. “Mama? Why is everyone yelling?”

Julian’s eyes softened slightly as he looked at his nephew. “Hey, buddy. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you.”

“It’s okay. People yell sometimes when they’re sad.”

“Yeah. They do.” Julian’s voice was rough. “What’s your name?”

“Leo.”

“Hi, Leo. I’m Julian. Your—” He looked at Tessa. “What do you want me to tell him?”

“The truth,” Tessa whispered. “That you’re his uncle.”

Julian’s eyes filled with tears. “I’m your uncle, Leo. Your mama’s brother.”

Leo’s face lit up. “I have an uncle?”

“Yeah, buddy. You do.”

“That’s so cool! Can you play trucks with me?”

Despite everything, Julian smiled. “Yeah. I can play trucks with you.”

Tessa set Leo down. He immediately ran to his toy bag, pulling out trucks to show Julian. And for a moment, watching them together, things felt almost normal.

Then Julian looked up at Tessa and Liam, and the anger returned.

“We’re not done talking,” he said quietly. “Not even close. But right now, I want to meet my nephew properly. So you two—you two figure your shit out. Because this?” He gestured between them. “This is a mess. And Leo deserves better than whatever dysfunctional situation you’re creating.”

“We’re not dysfunctional,” Liam started.

“You kept a child secret for two years. That’s the definition of dysfunctional.” Julian turned back to Leo. “But that’s not his fault. So I’m going to be the best uncle I can be. Even if I want to punch both of you right now.”

“Jules—”

“Not now, Tess. Just—just give me space. Let me process this. Let me—” His voice broke. “Let me be angry without you trying to fix it. Okay?”

Tessa nodded, tears streaming down her face.

Julian spent the next hour playing with Leo, asking him questions, learning everything he’d missed. And Tessa watched, her heart breaking, as her brother fell in love with her son.

When Leo finally fell asleep on the couch, exhausted from excitement, Julian stood.

“I need to go,” he said quietly.

“Jules, please—”

“I said I need space, Tessa. I meant it.” He looked at Liam. “We’ll talk. About the business. About—about everything. But not today.”

“Okay.”

Julian walked toward the door. Stopped. Turned back. “Does he know? About me? That I’m his uncle?”

“I told him he had an uncle,” Tessa said softly. “But I never—I never told him your name. I couldn’t—I couldn’t explain why you weren’t in his life without telling him everything.”

“So he’s known he had family out there. And you still kept him from me.”

“I’m so sorry—”

“Stop apologizing. It doesn’t change anything.” He opened the door. “I’ll call you. When I’m ready. Don’t—don’t push me before then.”

Then he was gone.

Tessa collapsed onto the couch, sobbing. Liam sat beside her, pulling her into his arms.

“He hates me,” she cried into his chest.

“He’s hurt. That’s different.”

“What if he never forgives me?”

“He will. He’s your brother. Your twin. He loves you. He just—he just needs time.”

“You don’t know that.”

“I do. Because I know Julian. And I know how much he loves you. This—this will take time. But he’ll come around. For Leo, if nothing else.”

Tessa wanted to believe him. But the look in Julian’s eyes—the betrayal, the hurt, the anger—was seared into her memory.

She’d broken her brother’s heart. Had destroyed his trust. Had—had possibly destroyed their relationship forever.

All because she’d been too scared to tell the truth.

And now she had to live with the consequences.

For the rest of her life.
