The cabin, once a symbol of Luna’s desperate solitude, was now filled with the presence she’d been aching for. Mason was here. He was truly here. The storm still raged outside, the wind howling and rain lashing against the windows, but inside, Luna felt safe for the first time in a week.

Mason held her for a long moment, then pulled back, his hands cupping her face, his green eyes searching hers with an intensity that took her breath away. “Luna, why?” his voice was rough with emotion. “Why did you leave? Do you have any idea what it did to me to wake up and find you gone? Find them gone?” His gaze flickered to the sleeping twins.

“I’m sorry,” Luna sobbed, the words tumbling out. “I’m so sorry, Mason. I thought… I thought if I left, Liam couldn’t use me and the babies against you. I thought I was protecting you.”

“Protecting me?” Mason’s voice rose slightly, and he immediately lowered it, mindful of the sleeping infants. “Luna, I don’t need protecting. We face things together. You, me, and them.” He gestured to Leo and Esperanza. “That’s what a family does.”

“I know,” Luna whispered, fresh tears streaming down her face. “I know that now. I was so scared, Mason. Scared of what Liam would do, scared of dragging you into a custody battle, scared of ruining everything we’d built. I thought… I thought if I just disappeared, he couldn’t hurt you.”

Mason’s jaw tightened, and he pulled her closer. “Luna, the only thing that hurt me was waking up and finding you gone. Finding them gone.” His voice broke slightly. “I thought I’d lost you. Lost all of you.”

“How did you find us?” Luna asked, looking up at him.

“Maya,” Mason said simply. “She came to check on me when you didn’t answer her calls. She was worried. She told me where you were – she felt terrible for helping you leave. I got in the truck and drove straight through the storm. Nothing was going to stop me from getting to you.”

Luna sobbed into his chest, overwhelmed by the depth of his love, his commitment. She had been so wrong. So terribly, foolishly wrong.

As if on cue, one of the twins – Leo – began to whimper. Mason immediately shifted, moving to the makeshift sleeping area. He gently lifted the tiny boy, cradling him with practiced ease. “Hey there, little man,” he murmured softly. “It’s okay. Daddy’s here.”

The word “Daddy” made Luna’s heart clench. He’d claimed them. Completely. Utterly. Not just her, but both babies.

Esperanza stirred next, her tiny face scrunching up in preparation for a cry. Luna reached for her, lifting her daughter into her arms. The four of them, together in the small cabin, the storm raging outside but peace settling within.

“We need to go home,” Mason said quietly, rocking Leo gently. “These babies need proper warmth, proper supplies. And you need rest. Real rest.”

Luna nodded. “I know. I’m so sorry, Mason. This was a mistake. Such a terrible mistake.”

“We’ll talk about it later,” Mason said, though his voice was gentle. “Right now, we focus on getting all of you home safely. The storm’s letting up. We can make it if we leave soon.”

He moved with purpose, gathering the few supplies Luna had brought, wrapping the twins in extra layers to keep them warm for the journey. He checked the truck, made sure the heater was working, arranged blankets in the back seat to create a safe, warm nest for the babies.

Luna watched him, this man who had driven through a storm to find them, who was now methodically preparing to take them home, and she knew with absolute certainty that she would never doubt him again. Never push him away. Whatever they faced – Liam, custody battles, anything – they would face it together.

“Ready?” Mason asked, holding the door open. The storm had indeed subsided, the rain now just a light drizzle.

Luna nodded, holding Esperanza close while Mason secured Leo in his arms. They stepped out into the cool, clean night air, heading toward the truck.

“Mason,” Luna said as he helped her into the passenger seat. “I love you. I should have trusted you. Trusted us.”

He paused, his green eyes meeting hers in the dim light. “I love you too, Luna. All of you.” He glanced at the twins. “And I’m never letting you go again. We’re a family. Forever.”

As they drove away from the cabin, the storm clouds breaking to reveal stars overhead, Luna felt a weight lift from her shoulders. She was going home. With her family. All of them together, as they should be.
