The week following their return home passed in a protective cocoon of family time. Mason had meant what he said about hiring a lawyer, and within days, they had their first meeting with Sarah Chen, a family law attorney with an impressive track record in custody cases.
Sarah sat across from them in Mason’s living room, her expression serious but compassionate as she listened to their story. Leo and Esperanza slept peacefully in their swings nearby.
“So let me make sure I understand,” Sarah said, reviewing her notes. “Liam broke off your engagement when you told him you were pregnant. He explicitly told you he wanted nothing to do with the baby. He disappeared for months. Then, only after the twins were born, he suddenly reappeared claiming parental rights?”
“That’s correct,” Luna said, Mason’s hand wrapped firmly around hers.
“And you’ve had no contact with him since returning from the cabin?”
“He’s called,” Mason said, his jaw tight. “Multiple times. Threatening texts. Demanding to see the babies. Luna hasn’t responded.”
Sarah nodded, making notes. “Good. Don’t respond. Document everything – save every text, every voicemail. We’re building a case for his abandonment.” She looked up at Luna. “I won’t lie to you – as the biological father, he does have some rights. But his abandonment, combined with his unstable behavior, gives us a strong case for supervised visitation at most. Full custody to you is very achievable.”
Luna felt a wave of relief wash over her. For the first time since Liam’s threats had begun, she felt a glimmer of hope that this nightmare might actually end.
“What about Mason?” Luna asked quietly. “He’s been there for them since before they were born. He was there for the delivery, for everything. Is there any way to… formalize his role?”
Sarah’s expression softened. “There are options. Adoption is one possibility, though that would require Liam to either consent or have his parental rights terminated. Another option is establishing Mason as a legal guardian, which can be done alongside your custody case.” She looked at Mason. “The court will see what I see – a man who has stepped up, who has been present, who loves these children as his own. That matters enormously.”
Mason’s hand tightened on Luna’s. “Whatever it takes,” he said firmly. “I want to protect them. Legally. In every way possible.”
Sarah smiled. “We’ll make that happen. For now, let’s focus on securing Luna’s full custody. Once that’s settled, we can explore your options.” She closed her folder. “I know this is overwhelming, but you have a strong case. Document everything, stay strong, and trust the process.”
After Sarah left, Luna sat on the couch with Mason, Leo sleeping peacefully in her arms while Esperanza dozed in her swing.
“Thank you,” Luna whispered, looking up at Mason. “For everything. For fighting for us.”
Mason cupped her face gently. “You’re my family, Luna. All three of you. I’ll fight for you every single day, for the rest of my life.”
As the twins slept peacefully around them, Luna felt a deep sense of peace. The battle ahead would be difficult, but they would face it together. They were a family – not by biology alone, but by choice, by love, by the unbreakable bonds they had forged.
