Maya spends the first of their last two days memorizing Julian.

The way his form flickers when he’s anxious. The cold-warmth of his touch. The smile that’s half-sadness, half-hope. The way he looks at her like she’s the only real thing in an unreal world.

She wants to remember everything.

Because in forty-eight hours, he’ll be gone.

They don’t talk about the ritual. Not yet. Instead, they pretend.

Pretend they have time. Pretend this isn’t goodbye. Pretend they’re just two people in love spending a normal day together.

Julian takes her to the places he loved when he was alive. The coffee shop where he wrote terrible poetry. The bookstore where he spent every Saturday browsing. The park where he proposed to Anna—and they both acknowledge the strange symmetry of that without dwelling on it.

“I’m going to bring her back,” Maya says as they sit on a bench overlooking the water. “Anna. I’m going to make sure she gets the life you wanted to give her.”

“I know you will.” Julian’s hand is solid in hers. “But Maya? Don’t let guilt drive you. Don’t spend the rest of your life trying to honor my memory by martyring yourself. Anna doesn’t need that. And neither do I.”

“Then what do you need?”

“I need you to be happy. To keep living. To find someone who makes you laugh the way you deserve to laugh.” Julian cups her face. “I need you to let me go. Really let me go. Not hold onto grief like it’s the last piece of me you have.”

“I don’t know how to do that.”

“You’ll learn. You’re stronger than you think.” He kisses her. Soft. Gentle. Final. “Promise me. When I cross over, you won’t follow. You’ll stay here. Keep fighting. Keep living.”

Maya wants to refuse. To argue. To say she’ll never love anyone else.

But she sees the plea in his eyes.

He needs to know she’ll be okay.

Needs to cross over believing she’ll survive this.

“I promise,” she whispers. “I’ll live. For both of us.”

“That’s all I ask.”

They sit together until the sun sets. Holding hands. Silent. Memorizing each other.

Day two is preparation.

Dr. Vance has cleared a space in her office. Drew protection sigils identical to the ones that worked for Lily’s resurrection. Father Thomas blessed everything three times. Mrs. Kowalski provided charms. Detective Webb is standing guard outside to ensure no interruptions.

And Maya stands in the center of it all, reviewing the ritual one more time.

“Anna’s soul should be accessible,” Dr. Vance says. “She crossed over recently. The bond with Julian is strong—they were engaged, deeply in love, connected by tragedy. Theoretically, this should work exactly like Lily’s resurrection.”

“Theoretically,” Maya repeats.

“I won’t lie to you. There’s risk. Julian’s soul is already degraded from seven lifetimes of cycling. Using it as fuel could fragment him. Cause pain. Make his crossing difficult instead of peaceful.”

“I won’t let that happen.”

“You might not be able to stop it. Magic has its own momentum once it starts.” Dr. Vance’s expression is serious. “If something goes wrong—if Julian starts to fracture—you have to be prepared to abort the ritual. Let him go without bringing Anna back.”

“No. We’re saving Anna. That’s the plan. That’s what Julian wants.”

“And if saving Anna destroys him? Leaves him trapped between life and death the way the entity was trapped? Suffering. Conscious. Unable to cross over or return?” Dr. Vance grabs Maya’s shoulders. “Could you live with that?”

Maya’s breath catches.

She hasn’t considered that possibility.

That the ritual could fail halfway. Consume Julian’s energy without completing Anna’s resurrection. Leave him worse than dead.

“We’ll make sure it doesn’t happen,” she says firmly. “We’ll do everything right. Follow every instruction. Keep the circle stable. It’ll work.”

“It worked for Lily because Catherine’s soul was intact. Uncorrupted. Julian’s soul is—”

“Is stronger than you think. He’s survived seven deaths. Seven lifetimes. He’s not going to break now.” Maya pulls away. “I need to prepare. The new moon is in six hours.”

She dismisses everyone except Julian.

When they’re alone, she says, “Dr. Vance thinks using your energy might fragment you. Cause pain. Make the crossing difficult.”

“I know. I heard her.” Julian doesn’t look surprised. “I’ve been degrading for months. Every iteration takes more out of me than the last. Using what’s left to fuel resurrection… it’s going to hurt.”

“Then we don’t do it. We find another way—”

“There is no other way. And I’m not backing out now.” Julian takes her hands. “Maya, I’ve spent seven lifetimes watching people I love die. I’ve failed to save them every single time. This is my chance to finally save someone. To make all the suffering mean something. I’m not giving that up because I’m afraid of pain.”

“I’m afraid of losing you in agony. Of you suffering. Of your last moments being torment instead of peace.”

“Then make sure they’re not. Perform the ritual perfectly. Keep me stable. And when it’s time for me to cross over, let me go knowing I saved Anna. That’s all the peace I need.”

Maya wants to argue more.

But she sees the resolution in his eyes.

This is happening.

Whether she’s ready or not.

“Six hours,” she whispers.

“Six hours,” Julian agrees. “Let’s make them count.”

They spend the time talking.

Not about the ritual. Not about what comes after.

Just… talking.

Julian tells her about his first life. The real one. Before the curse. Before the cycling. When he was just a man in love with his sister’s best friend, planning a future that never came.

Maya tells him about her childhood. About seeing her grandmother’s ghost at age five and knowing—absolutely knowing—that death wasn’t the end.

They share memories. Dreams. Regrets.

“If I could come back,” Julian says, “not through resurrection, but as a living person with no curse, no cycling, no entity… would you want that? Would you want me alive?”

“Of course. Why would you even ask?”

“Because the me you know is defined by death. By suffering. By the curse. If all that was gone—if I was just a normal man—would I still be the person you fell in love with?”

Maya thinks about this.

Then she says, “I fell in love with your determination. Your refusal to give up even when everything was terrible. Your capacity to love even after losing people over and over. Those things aren’t because of the curse. They’re because of you. So yes. I’d love you alive just as much as I love you dead.”

Julian smiles. “Good to know.”

“Why? Planning a miraculous return from the afterlife?”

“No. Just wanted to hear you say it.” He kisses her forehead. “I love you, Maya Rivers. In this life and whatever comes after. Don’t ever forget that.”

“I won’t. I couldn’t if I tried.”

The clock ticks down.

Five hours. Four. Three.

Mrs. Kowalski brings food. Maya can’t eat. Julian sits with her anyway.

Father Thomas prays. Blesses them both.

Detective Webb offers to call it off. “Just say the word. We’ll find another way.”

But there is no other way.

Two hours.

Dr. Vance does a final check of the protection circle. Everything is perfect. Ready.

One hour.

Maya changes into clean clothes. Washes her hands. Prepares her mind.

Thirty minutes.

Julian becomes fully solid. The blood bond flaring bright. He looks almost alive.

Almost.

Ten minutes.

They stand in the circle. Maya at the center. Julian at the edge. Ready.

“I love you,” Maya says one last time.

“I love you too. Forever.” Julian’s form is glowing. Golden. Beautiful. “Thank you for fighting for me. For believing I was worth saving.”

“You were always worth saving.”

“So was Anna. Make sure she knows that. When she comes back. Tell her I never blamed her. Never regretted loving her. And I’m glad she gets a second chance.”

“I will.”

The new moon reaches its peak.

Midnight.

Perfect balance between light and dark.

Life and death.

Maya speaks the words.

And the ritual begins.

For the last time.
