The official visit from Ms. Davies arrived with military precision—Thursday morning at exactly nine o’clock, announced by a crisp knock that seemed to echo through every corner of Liam’s apartment. Elise had been awake since five, reorganizing kitchen cabinets that didn’t need reorganizing and rehearsing answers to questions she could only guess at.

“Ready?” Liam asked, straightening his tie. Even nervous, he looked unflappable.

Elise smoothed her dress—one of three “wife” outfits she’d bought specifically for this performance—and nodded. “As ready as someone can be for the most important acting job of her life.”

“Ms. Davies,” Liam greeted their visitor with professional warmth. “Please come in. Can I offer you coffee?”

The social worker declined politely, her sharp eyes already cataloging details. She noted the wedding photos on the mantle, Lily’s backpack by the door, the coffee cups side-by-side on the counter—all carefully staged markers of domestic life.

“How has the transition been?” Ms. Davies asked as they settled in the living room. “Moving in together after the wedding?”

“Surprisingly smooth,” Elise replied, proud that her voice stayed steady. “Liam and I spent so much time together before that living here feels natural.”

“And Lily’s adjustment?”

“She’s thriving,” Liam said, his hand finding Elise’s knee—a gesture that was becoming automatic. “She loves having more space, and she’s gotten very attached to the building’s doorman. He always has candy for her.”

Ms. Davies made notes. “May I see Lily’s room?”

They gave her the full tour, watching as she examined the carefully curated space—Lily’s drawings on the walls, her favorite books on the shelves, the nightlight Liam had bought after learning she was afraid of the dark. Every detail told the story they needed: a child who belonged here.

“You’ve clearly put thought into making her comfortable,” Ms. Davies observed.

“She’s our priority,” Elise said, meaning it completely. “Everything we do centers around what’s best for her.”

Back in the living room, Ms. Davies consulted her clipboard. “I’d like to discuss your relationship timeline. You’ve been together for eighteen months?”

Liam nodded. “We kept things quiet initially. Elise had enough on her plate with Lily’s transition, and I didn’t want to add pressure.”

“What changed your mind about marriage?”

This was the moment they’d practiced. Elise looked at Liam, letting genuine affection show in her expression. “The custody challenge made us realize we weren’t just playing house anymore. We were building something real. Something worth protecting.”

“The decision was mutual?”

“Completely,” Liam said. “I proposed the weekend after we got the first notice.”

Ms. Davies glanced at the wedding photos again. “Small ceremony.”

“We wanted intimate,” Elise explained. “Just us, saying vows that mattered. We didn’t need a big production to know what we meant to each other.”

The questioning continued for another hour—finances, future plans, discipline strategies, emergency contacts. They answered in sync, their stories aligning perfectly, their body language relaxed and natural.

Finally, Ms. Davies closed her notebook. “I’ll be filing my preliminary report next week. You should know that your home assessment is very positive. Lily appears secure and happy, and you’ve created a stable environment for her.”

After she left, Elise sank onto the couch, the adrenaline crash hitting her like a wave.

“We did it,” she breathed. “She believed us.”

“Why wouldn’t she?” Liam sat beside her, loosening his tie. “Most of what we told her was true. We do put Lily first. We are building something together. The only difference is the timeline and our… motivations.”

“Right. Motivations.” She studied his profile, wondering not for the first time what had really driven him to agree to this. “Liam, why did you say yes? Really?”

He was quiet for a long moment. “Because Lily deserves better than the system. Because you’re a good mother to her. And because…” He turned to meet her eyes. “Because I’ve never seen you as happy as you’ve been these past few months. Not since college.”

The admission hung between them, loaded with implications neither seemed ready to explore.

“Thank you,” she said finally. “For all of this. For turning your life upside down for us.”

“My life needed some upside-down.” His smile was soft, genuine. “Besides, I’m getting used to having family around. Even fake family.”

The word “fake” stung more than it should have. Elise was still processing that reaction when Lily burst through the front door, home from school and full of energy.

“Did the lady come?” she asked immediately. “The one who decides if I get to stay?”

“She came,” Elise confirmed, pulling Lily onto her lap. “And she was very impressed with our home.”

“Good.” Lily settled against her with satisfaction. “I told her at school that you and Uncle Liam love each other very much and that’s why families stay together.”

Elise’s breath caught. “You told who at school?”

“Mrs. Patterson. She asked if I was worried about the lady’s visit, and I said no because love makes everything okay.” Lily looked between them with innocent confidence. “That’s true, right? Love fixes things?”

Over Lily’s head, Elise met Liam’s gaze. His expression was unreadable, but something in his eyes made her pulse quicken.

“Yes,” he said quietly. “Love fixes things.”

That evening, after Lily was asleep, they sat on the couch reviewing the day. The apartment felt different somehow—less like a stage set, more like a home they’d actually chosen together.

“I think we passed the test,” Elise said, curled into the corner of the sofa with a glass of wine.

“First test,” Liam corrected. “There’ll be more visits, more questions. We need to keep this up until the custody is finalized.”

“How long do you think that’ll be?”

“A few months, maybe longer.” He swirled his own wine thoughtfully. “Think you can handle being married to me that long?”

The question was casual, but Elise caught the undercurrent of something deeper. “I think I’ll manage. You’re not terrible company.”

“High praise.”

They sat in comfortable silence, the city lights twinkling beyond the windows. Despite everything—the deception, the pressure, the constant performance—this felt strangely peaceful. Natural, even.

“Liam,” she said suddenly. “What happens after? When the custody is finalized and we don’t need to be married anymore?”

His glass paused halfway to his lips. “What do you want to happen?”

It was a fair question. A month ago, she would have said divorce immediately, go back to their separate lives, pretend this interlude never happened. Now, sitting in their shared living room with their shared routines and their shared responsibility for Lily, she wasn’t sure.

“I don’t know,” she admitted. “This whole thing has been…”

“Complicated?”

“More than I expected.” She looked at him—really looked at him—seeing not just her reliable friend but the man who’d rearranged his entire life for her, who made Lily laugh, who touched her so naturally she sometimes forgot it was pretend. “What about you?”

“I don’t know either.” His honesty was both comforting and terrifying. “But I think we have time to figure it out.”

Time. Yes, they had that. Months of playing house, of shared mornings and bedtime routines and carefully choreographed affection. Months of pretending to be something they weren’t.

Or maybe months of discovering what they actually were.

As Elise prepared for bed that night, she caught sight of herself in the bathroom mirror. She looked different somehow—less guarded, softer around the edges. Like a woman who was loved, even if that love was carefully constructed and strategically deployed.

The scary thing was how much she liked that version of herself.

The scarier thing was wondering what would happen to her when the performance ended.
